Innovations for the digital society of tomorrow are the focus of research and development work at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, HHI. The Fraunhofer HHI is a world leader in research into mobile and optical communication networks and systems as well as the coding of video signals and data processing. The Department of Wireless Communications and Networks is recruiting research engineers in the area of wireless system design for 6G. The Group Technologies and Standards focuses on early investigation of emerging wireless technology components and their impact on standardization. What you will do

Your tasks will include the design and development of wireless communication systems and protocols. Your work includes analysis of standard contributions, observation of technology trends, identification of improvements, and development of technical solutions matching to the scope of 3GPP. You will attend standardization meetings and present related proposals in the 3GPP working groups of RAN.

The areas of interest can include mobility enhancements, extended sensing and reporting, streamlining of network functions and interactions, interfaces and protocols, interoperation between various access technologies including fixed wireless access and WiFi access, and seamless interworking across RATs.

Further topics of relevance can include

XR/immersive communication and AI-based services

Operation in new frequency ranges discussed for 6G and related protocol signaling aspects

Cell-free design for distributed MIMO systems

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC)

Ubiquitos coverage integrating terrestrial networks (TN) and non-terrestrial networks (NTN)

Support of IoT devices across generations including IIoT and A-IoT

The scientific work offers the possibility of a doctorate.

What you bring to the table

Bachelors, Masters, or a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical field

> 1 years of related experience or equivalent experience in wireless communications

> 1 years of experience working with 5G or 6G wireless

Strong background in wireless communication with emphasis on medium access layer protocols (MAC), machine learning and LTE/5G procedures

Excellent analytical understanding and research skills

Creative thinking and interest in new technologies

Self-motivated, proactive, you feel competent and confident in international environments

Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English

Preferred qualifications:

> 2 years of wireless standardization experience in 3GPP, e.g., RAN1 or RAN2

Experience with technologies in vertical industries
