The Max-Planck-Institute for Neurobiology of Behaviour – caesar in Bonn is seeking a PhD student for a project on predator-prey interactions. The role involves both wet lab and computational work, focusing on behavioral data analysis and modeling. Candidates should have a Master's degree in relevant fields and experience with Python or Matlab.
The Max-Planck-Institute for Neurobiology of Behaviour – caesar (MPINB) is a neuroethology institute located in Bonn that studies how the collective activity of interconnected neurons in the brain gives rise to animal behaviors. Our research spans from nano-scale imaging of brain circuitry to large-scale functional imaging during behavior, and the quantification of natural animal behaviors.
We are seeking a PhD student to work on a joint project between the Neural Information Flow (Scholz) and Genetics of Behavior (Lightfoot) groups. Using a comparative approach, the project aims to understand how evolution has adapted existing behaviors and created new ones through changes in neuronal circuits. Building on our recent work identifying circuits underlying predatory aggression, we are expanding into functional imaging (whole-brain and single neuron) and behavior analysis. The position involves both wet lab and computational work, situated within both research groups.
Position: PhD Student (m/f/div) - Neural Information Flow and Genetics of Behavior
The Project:
You will investigate the action sequences involved in predator-prey interactions between the nematode Pristionchus pacificus and its prey. Using tracking microscopy, you will collect high-resolution behavioral data of predator-prey contacts to understand the decision-making processes underlying aggressive predatory biting. Data-driven modeling will be used to compare these dynamics, exploring prey choice and reward signaling.
What we offer:
MPINB is committed to promoting equal opportunities and diversity. We welcome applications from all backgrounds, regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation. We aim to increase the representation of women in under-represented areas and explicitly encourage women to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications will receive preferential consideration.
