Research Associate – Edge Computing (IT-Systems) - Projekt EMULATE; Faculty of Computer Science; (EG 13 TV-L), Dortmund

Join our university as soon as possible, full-time and temporarily until the position is filled. The position is within the Faculty of Computer Science (Salary level: 13 TV-L).

Today, edge computing is one of the most exciting areas in the computer and network industry. Together with leading industry partners, the Projekt EMULATE will develop an innovative toolset to improve the performance of demanding edge applications such as autonomous driving, augmented reality, and drone control.

Your future field of work:

• Developing tools to measure and analyze the performance of edge applications in IT systems (servers, user devices).
• Creating new IT-system-related approaches to optimize the performance of edge applications.
• Contributing to the edge emulation and edge diagnostics toolsets.
• Identifying your own research areas aligned with the project objectives and constraints.
• Publishing scientific papers on edge research for conferences and journals.
• Working in an excellent lab environment with a 5G campus network and high-performance server cluster.
• Collaborating within an interdisciplinary, international team of IT, network, and application experts.

Candidate requirements:

You should be passionate about computer science or related fields with a strong interest in research. A master's degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field is required. Ideally, you have some professional experience demonstrating your passion.

Your qualifications and expertise may include some of the following:

• Solid knowledge and experience with IT systems and embedded systems.
• Good knowledge of software development using object-oriented languages.
• Basic understanding of networking (TCP/IP, Ethernet).
• Basic knowledge of virtualization, containerization, and orchestration technologies.
• Willingness to learn about edge computing, system performance optimization, 5G/6G technologies, and artificial intelligence.
• Proficiency in English (both written and spoken); German language skills are not required.
