"Research for a life without cancer" is our mission at the German Cancer Research Center. We investigate how cancer develops, identify cancer risk factors, and look for new cancer prevention strategies. We develop new methods for tumor diagnosis and cancer treatment. Every contribution counts—whether in research, administration, or infrastructure. This makes our daily work meaningful and exciting.

For the Helmholtz Institute HI-TRON in Mainz, we are looking for a Imaging Staff Scientist.

Reference number: 2025-0142

The Helmholtz Institute HI-TRON in Mainz is a collaboration of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), Johannes Gutenberg-University (JGU), University Medicine Mainz (UM Mainz), and TRON gGmbH (TRON). The partnership aims to develop pioneering immunotherapies and identify new biomarkers for treatment effectiveness.

We seek a skilled and motivated Staff Scientist with expertise in advanced imaging techniques, including confocal microscopy, live-cell imaging, Coherent Raman Scattering (CRS), and two-photon microscopy.

The successful candidate will join the HI-TRON Cellular Phenotyping Platform and support imaging-based research across HI-TRON divisions. This role involves working with state-of-the-art imaging platforms to drive innovation in cancer research, immunology, and molecular biology.

  • Ensure operation and maintenance of advanced microscopy systems for confocal, live-cell, and in vivo imaging.
  • Develop, optimize, and implement imaging workflows for 2D and 3D imaging of fixed and live specimens.
  • Train and support researchers in experimental design, image acquisition, and data analysis.
  • Stay current with emerging imaging technologies, analysis tools, and best practices.
  • Assist with platform management, user coordination, and documentation.
  • PhD in life sciences, biomedical engineering, biophysics, or related field, with proven microscopy expertise.
  • Experience in an imaging facility is a strong asset.
  • Experience with fluorescence microscopy (confocal, two-photon) and CRS imaging systems or similar technologies.
  • Strong background in quantitative image analysis software such as FIJI/ImageJ, Imaris, or similar.
  • Research experience in cancer biology, immunology, or molecular biology is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for training and collaboration.
  • Proficiency in laboratory management, including equipment maintenance.
  • Strong English communication skills; German is a plus but not required.
