ForWind - Center for Wind Energy Research has a vacancy in the team Energy Meteorology of the research group "Wind Energy Systems" at the Institute of Physics of the University of Oldenburg for a
PhD position / Research Assistant (f/m/d) Numerical development of mitigation strategies for wind farm cluster wakes (E13 TV-L, 75%).
The future energy system will rely on large wind farm clusters with hundreds of turbines. The wake, i.e., the downstream flow, of such clusters reduces the energy yield of neighboring wind farms. We seek to model these cluster wakes using High Performance Computing (HPC) and to develop and test strategies to mitigate their impact.
The main goal of your PhD project is to improve understanding of wind farm cluster wakes and develop mitigation strategies, primarily using atmospheric large-eddy simulations (LES), which are increasingly adopted in the wind industry.
Your tasks will include:
This research is part of a joint project involving three research institutes and a major wind farm operator. You will have access to satellite data, measurement data, and our high-performance computing resources. The team has over two decades of experience in fluid dynamics simulations using the LES model PALM.
We offer a stimulating environment to develop your scientific career, including collaboration with other researchers, international partners, and opportunities for mobility and training. You will work in the modern WindLab facilities and receive structured supervision throughout your PhD process.
The position is initially limited to three years, with potential extension up to four years for PhD completion. Compensation is based on the collective agreement TV-LE13, for a 75% position.
Required qualifications:
Desired but not mandatory qualifications include:
The University of Oldenburg encourages women to apply and offers a family-friendly environment. Severely disabled persons will be given preference if equally qualified.
