As part of the BlueMat research initiative's Research Area D – Energy Materials, we are seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate to join our interdisciplinary team.

Our research focuses on fundamentally understanding liquids at solid-liquid interfaces and within nanoporous functional materials, aiming to revolutionize energy storage and conversion technologies using environmentally friendly materials.

About BlueMat – Water-Driven Materials The BlueMat Initiative is an interdisciplinary team and vision that aims to develop a new class of sustainable, interactive “blue” materials. Inspired by the extraordinary efficiency and multiscale architectures of biological systems, BlueMat explores how water—as a ubiquitous and highly dynamic medium, can be harnessed in combination with structured materials for innovative functionalities.

YOUR TASKS

  • Conduct cutting-edge research on the dynamics of confined water and aqueous solutions in solid-state and soft-matter systems for energy applications
  • Apply advanced spectroscopic techniques to study interfacial water dynamics and molecular interactions at the nanoscale.
  • Utilize large-scale facilities such as the European XFEL to resolve the structural dynamics of aqueous interfaces with ultrafast temporal resolution
  • Integrate experimental data with molecular dynamics simulations to guide materials design and improve our understanding of interfacial phenomena
  • Collaborate with experts within the BlueMat cluster and beyond, including those in porous materials, micro/nano-structures, and dielectric properties

YOUR PROFILE

Requirements

  • Completed scientific university studies, in particular in the subject*sPhysics, Physical Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or a related field

Required Knowledge And Personal Skills

  • A strong interest in energy materials, soft matter, and interfacial science.
  • Experience with at least one of the following: spectroscopy, X-ray techniques, nanomaterials, electrochemistry, or theoretical physical chemistry.
  • Motivation to work in a highly interdisciplinary, collaborative research environment.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and oral, B2/C1 GeR)

OUR OFFER

  • Access to state-of-the-art experimental facilities and large-scale research infrastructure, such as EuXFEL
  • A stimulating research environment that promotes collaboration across disciplines, including with leading experts in porous materials, structured dielectrics, and interfacial physics
  • Opportunity to develop cutting-edge expertise in spectroscopy, X-ray methods, and chemical engineering
  • Support for personal development and career advancement, including opportunities to participate in international conferences and workshops, and international internships
