Jobbeschreibung

Master’s Thesis (m/f/d) – Quantum Error Correction / Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing, Nuremberg

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) operates 76 institutes across Germany and is a leading applied research organization with around 32,000 employees and an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

The »Quantum Compilation« group at Fraunhofer IIS, part of the »Machine Intelligence« department in Nuremberg, is seeking motivated students for a Master's thesis. Our team has diverse backgrounds in computer science, engineering, and physics, focusing on quantum computing topics like quantum machine learning, error correction, and quantum-circuit cutting. This thesis is a joint project with the »Chair for Quantum Theory« at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg, supervised by Prof. Dr. Michael J. Hartmann.

Quantum Error Correction (QEC) aims to enable large-scale Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing (FTQC) by encoding quantum states to detect and correct errors. Current methods are resource-intensive, so developing more efficient approaches is crucial.

If you're interested in quantum error correction and want to enhance your skills, consider this opportunity!

Responsibilities
  1. Conduct research on quantum error correction and fault-tolerance, guided by an experienced researcher.
  2. Develop and implement techniques to reduce the overhead of quantum error correction.
  3. Apply machine learning and reinforcement learning tools.
  4. Perform experiments in simulation and on quantum hardware.
  5. Document findings for your master’s thesis, with potential for publication.
Qualifications
  1. Studying physics, computer science, mathematics, or a related field.
  2. Experience with quantum computing and error correction.
  3. Basic Python skills, including quantum libraries like Qiskit.
  4. Interest in machine learning and optimization tools.
  5. English communication skills.
  6. Willingness to attend in-person meetings in Nuremberg, with remote options.
What We Offer
  • Supportive and friendly team environment.
  • Creative and varied tasks.
  • Seminars, events, and networking opportunities.
  • Active role in applied research and innovative projects.
  • Mentoring program »josephine« for talented female students.

We invite applications for a Master's thesis collaboration on this topic, following your university's rules. Post-graduation, full or part-time employment options are available.

We value diversity and encourage applications regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or identity.
