Bioengineer (f/m/d)

Heidelberg University, in collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology and the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, established the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung Center for Synthetic Genomics (CZS Center SynGen) to advance the potential and application of synthetic genomics in life and engineering sciences.

The newly founded Synthetic DNA Accelerator Lab (www.syn-gen.de/syngen-dna-lab) is central to the CZS Center SynGen. It aims to support research groups with complex DNA constructs for synthetic genomics. This lab focuses on DNA writing, analogous to NGS core facilities for DNA reading, developing infrastructure, workflows, and methodologies for DNA assembly and diversification. It also promotes community building and outreach to foster responsible adoption of synthetic genomics. As one of the few labs of its kind globally, it offers unique opportunities to lead in this emerging field.

The Synthetic DNA Accelerator Lab is recruiting two positions starting November 1, 2024 (initially for 2 years, with possible extension):

Your Role:
  • Implement and optimize workflows for assembling and diversifying synthetic DNA using innovative in vitro and in vivo methods, following SOPs.
  • Document results and present findings at group meetings.
  • Operate and maintain advanced instrumentation, including robotic systems.
  • Manage lab equipment and user access.
  • Interact with customers and handle requests independently.
  • Train new team members and visiting researchers in DNA manipulation techniques.
  • Coordinate resource shipping to collaborators.
  • Maintain lab safety, cleanliness, and organization.
  • Manage lab stocks, order supplies, handle waste, and perform routine calibrations.
Your Profile:
Essential qualifications:
  • Strong motivation to advance synthetic genomics approaches.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and protocols.
  • Advanced training in molecular biotechnology and genetics (e.g., B.Sc. in Biotechnology).
  • Experience in molecular biology and microbiology techniques (e.g., cloning, PCR, E. coli handling).
  • Proficient in lab documentation.
  • Familiar with standard office software.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
Desirable qualifications:
  • Over 2 years of practical experience post-training.
  • Experience with S. cerevisiae genetics.
  • Additional technical training (e.g., BTA, CTA).
  • Experience with lab automation.
  • Ability to instruct others in new techniques.
  • Interest in technology development.
  • Fluency in German.
Interdisciplinary skills:
  • Customer-oriented, polite, and clear communication.
  • Structured, reliable, and tidy.
  • Proactive team player contributing positively to the lab environment.
We offer:

Working at the forefront of synthetic genomics, this role offers a unique chance to contribute to a paradigm shift in science.

  • Varied, ambitious work in an innovative, international environment.
  • Supportive and collaborative team.
  • Internal education programs at Heidelberg University.
  • Subsidized transportation (Deutschlandticket).
  • Additional pension scheme (VBL).

The position may be part-time. Salary up to E10 (TV-L) depending on experience.

Application deadline: September 13, 2024. Please submit your application (cover letter, CV, certificates) as a single PDF via email with the subject 'Application Bioengineer' to Dr. Konrad Herbst at [emailprotected]. Be prepared to provide 1-2 referees if requested. For inquiries, contact Dr. Herbst at the same email.
