Job Description:

The GSK Oncology Genomics team in Research Technologies is seeking a highly motivated Oncology Computational Biologist. Your focus will be to apply computational biology skills and methods to discover and develop the next generation of oncology therapeutics. You will work in an inter-disciplinary environment, interfacing with wet-lab and translational scientists, clinicians, statisticians, and AI/ML colleagues.

Successful applicants should have strong analytical skills, a foundation in cancer and computational biology, accountability, and the ability to communicate complex scientific findings effectively.

GSK’s Oncology portfolio has seen significant growth, with approvals and positive Phase 3 outcomes. Oncology is a key growth driver, requiring leadership in computational biology to analyze complex genetic and genomic datasets.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Analyze and integrate complex cancer datasets, including gene & protein expression, somatic mutations, copy number alterations, and structural variants.
  2. Develop bioinformatics pipelines using R, Python, and bash, with version control systems like Git and Docker.
  3. Utilize cloud computing platforms (AWS, GCP) and database technologies (SQL, BigQuery).
  4. Interpret publicly available cancer datasets (e.g., TCGA, CPTAC, DepMap, PRISM).
  5. Apply statistical methods and machine learning algorithms for pattern recognition, drug response prediction, and biomarker discovery. Conduct survival analysis.
  6. Communicate findings clearly to diverse audiences.
  7. Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team and act as a subject matter expert.
  8. Stay updated on advancements in cancer research and computational biology.
Basic Qualifications:
  • PhD +0-2 years postdoc/industry experience OR MS with 6-10 years related experience in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Cancer Biology, or related fields.
  • Strong understanding of cancer biology and drug discovery.
  • Proficiency in Python or R, with experience in bioinformatics workflows and version control.
  • Experience with HPC and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP) and databases (SQL, BigQuery).
  • Experience analyzing genomics data types such as spatial data, WGS/WES, or proteomics.
  • Experience working with large oncology datasets (e.g., TCGA, CPTAC, DepMap, PRISM).
  • Knowledge of statistical, machine learning, and survival analysis methods.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with single-cell and spatial data analysis.
  • Experience with large-scale real-world datasets and drug discovery in oncology.
  • Strong publication record or impactful first-author papers.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Independent, eager to learn, and team-oriented.
