The focus of GNSS Reflectometry lies on the usage of signals from navigation satellites for remote sensing of the Earth’s Atmosphere and Surface with ground and satellite based techniques. Main observation data are from global and regional GNSS ground networks, dedicated ground and flight experiments, and from several Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites. Artificial Intelligence in GNSS Reflectometry has shown promising results in enhancing data accuracy and quality. The derived geophysical parameters, such as wind velocity and surface properties like soil moisture, are used in various Earth System Science applications. To support our GNSS Reflectometry team, we seek a new colleague. This position involves cutting-edge research combined with operational tasks within an international and interdisciplinary environment.

Your responsibilities:

  1. Develop AI models for processing GNSS reflectometry data for meteorological applications, including measurements of wind velocity/direction, vegetation, and soil moisture, considering operational aspects and integrating signals from all satellite systems (GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou).
  2. Validate the AI models using independent data sources such as satellite radars and in-situ measurements to improve their quality, and to characterize errors, accuracy, and precision.
  3. Support collaboration with partner institutions for the operational application of GNSS Reflectometry data in atmospheric research, weather forecasting, environmental monitoring, and climate studies.

Your qualifications:

  1. MSc in Geodesy, Remote Sensing, Meteorology, Physics, or Geophysics.
  2. Experience in AI development for GNSS data processing and model validation.
  3. First author publications in AI and deep learning applications in GNSS reflectometry.
  4. Experience in developing scientific software, e.g., in Python and/or Matlab, with good UNIX/Linux knowledge and programming skills.

Special Skills:

  1. Excellent English language skills.
  2. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, international team with strong communication skills.
  3. High motivation and independence.

What we offer:

  1. Engaging and diverse tasks in a dynamic, international research environment.
  2. State-of-the-art equipment.
  3. Public service benefits and extensive training opportunities.
  4. Career development support from our in-house Career-Centre.
  5. Flexible working hours and conditions.
  6. Support for work-life balance through benefit@work.
  7. On-site institute day-care center.
  8. Work at the Albert Einstein Science Park on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam.
  9. Proximity to Potsdam main train station with shuttle service options.

Start date: 1st November 2024

Fixed-term: 12 months

Salary: Salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”, based on qualifications.

Working hours: Part-time (50%), approx. 19.5 hours/week.

Place of work: Potsdam
