The intermittency of renewable energy sources leads to flexible operation of processes such as electrolysis and methanol synthesis in power-to-methanol plants. To minimize the levelized costs of methanol (LCOM), optimizing unit operations is necessary. Your assignment will include the following work packages:

  1. Conduct extensive literature research, including deriving component prices.
  2. Validate the operation strategy.
  3. Select and implement a suitable optimization method for an existing process simulation.
  4. Perform techno-economic optimization of the process chain concerning LCOM for different use-cases, including heat integration potential and key parameter sensitivities.

Minimum requirements include:

  • Education: Master’s studies in Chemical and Process Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a comparable field with good grades.
  • Experience and Knowledge: Numerical optimization methods, programming in Python, and a basic understanding of water electrolysis.
  • Personality and Working Practice: Well-organized, effective communicator, able to work independently.
  • Languages: Fluent in English; German is a plus.
