Job Description:

Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) employs around 1,500 staff from over 70 nations, focusing on research in ENERGY, HEALTH, and MATTER to address societal challenges.

The Institute of Fluid Dynamics conducts basic and applied research in thermo-fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics to enhance industrial process sustainability, energy efficiency, and safety.

The Electromagnetic Separation group within the Department of Transport Processes at Interfaces seeks a Scientific Assistant (f/m/d) for developing an innovative measuring system for detecting and characterizing critical raw materials in sustainable production processes (KepRE).

The role involves developing a modular platform that integrates a magnetic levitation system with a rare-earth particle-laden two-phase system, emphasizing measurement system innovations. Key tasks include:

  1. Designing, constructing, experimenting, and simulating a modular apparatus comprising magnetic levitation, measurement, and two-phase systems.
  2. Implementing and calibrating a microelectrode array-based electric impedance/resistivity tomography system, validated with optical imaging.
  3. Modeling the physical and chemical aspects of the two-phase system within the magnetic levitation setup and correlating data with parameters relevant to rare-earth separation.
  4. Acquiring knowledge in supervised machine learning to process data for key parameter extraction.
  5. Demonstrating the developed system to industrial partners and supporting the transfer and commercialization strategies, including potential licensing of intellectual property.
  6. Drafting patents and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
Your profile
  • Master's or Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields, with excellent academic records.
  • Strong experimental skills, organized approach to experiment planning, execution, and analysis.
  • Experience or knowledge in electric impedance or resistivity tomography is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of fluid dynamics in two-phase systems involving particles.
  • Understanding of magnetism and magnetic materials.
  • Skills in PCB design, sensor technology, signal processing, and familiarity with software such as Python, C++, MATLAB, and hardware automation with LabVIEW or Python.
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and verbal, and ability to work independently and in teams.
Our offer
  • International research environment with professional networking opportunities.
  • Competitive salary and social benefits according to the TVöD-Bund collective agreement, including paid leave and pension scheme.
  • Flexible work arrangements supporting work-life balance, including part-time work, mobile working, and flexible hours.
  • Health management programs, employee discounts, and subsidies for public transport.

Interested candidates are invited to submit their application documents via our online system, including cover letter, CV, diplomas, and transcripts.
