Area of research:

Scientific / postdoctoral posts

Starting date:

Job description:

DESY, with the storage ring PETRA III and the Free-Electron-Laser FLASH, offers a unique combination of photon sources to the scientific community. PETRA III, one of the most brilliant hard X-ray facilities worldwide, currently provides 23 undulator beamlines for experiments utilizing the extreme source brilliance. The new beamline P25 will be built for innovative industrial applications and will serve as a testbed for new technical developments towards PETRA IV. We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced scientist to plan and develop a fully automated instrument for high-throughput powder diffraction at P25, including commissioning and user support in collaboration with the powder diffraction team at beamline P02.1. This beamline specializes in high-energy X-ray powder diffraction and PDF methods, working on in-situ crystallization, variable temperature studies, operando studies of battery materials and catalysts, stress-strain measurements, and rapid data collections under ambient conditions. The candidate should also contribute to our in-house research program through their own projects.

About your role:
  1. Development and commissioning of the new fully automated powder diffraction endstation at P25 in collaboration with scientists and engineers.
  2. User support at P25 and P02.1.
  3. Work as part of a team to provide operational support for powder diffraction and PDF experiments, collaborating with the international user community and industry.
  4. Develop and pursue an in-house research program in powder diffraction or total scattering.
About you:
  • Completed higher education (master or diploma) in physics, materials science, or a related field, or equivalent expertise and experience.
  • PhD in chemistry, physics, materials science, or a related field.
  • Profound knowledge in beamline instrumentation and data collection at 3rd generation synchrotron beamlines.
  • Experience analyzing data from powder diffraction or total scattering experiments.
  • Knowledge in pharmacy, in-situ catalytic or gas sorption studies, battery materials.
  • Experience in user operation and design of automated experiments.
  • Basic programming skills, preferably in Python.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills in English.

We offer a unique international research environment, flexible working hours, part-time options, job sharing, mobile work (up to 50%), and a supportive, family-friendly atmosphere. Our benefits include health management, occupational pension, comprehensive training, and development opportunities. Remuneration follows TV-AVH regulations, with a financial supplement for the German job ticket. We encourage women and severely handicapped persons to apply, and part-time employment is supported.
