Company Description

Here at Volocopter, we are pioneers of electric air taxis (electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft - eVTOLs). We aim to bring sustainable urban air mobility to life by launching electric air taxis that complement existing transportation options in megacities worldwide. Since our first crewed electric multicopter flight in 2011, we've conducted over 2,000 test flights globally.

Job Description

Our custom Electric Propulsion System, comprising advanced batteries, power distribution, and electric motors, is crucial for the safety of Volocopter’s products. Your experience in developing electrical systems for aviation or integrating electric propulsion components into mobility products will directly contribute to certifying this safe and straightforward flight experience. As part of our Energy Storage Unit (ESU) development team, you will ensure that system development processes are followed by the battery and power distribution teams.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Leading and conducting verification activities for battery safety, reliability, and performance, targeting SC-VTOL and E-19 certification.
  • Ensuring compliance with EASA's SC-VTOL and E-19 regulations during battery design, development, and testing.
  • Developing test plans, overseeing battery testing, analyzing data, and reporting on performance aspects such as energy storage, thermal management, electromagnetic interference, salt spray, fungus, magnetic effects, and overall safety.
  • Maintaining detailed documentation of verification activities, test results, and analyses, ensuring standards compliance.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including design engineers and regulatory experts, for seamless battery integration and verification.
  • Communicating progress and concerns effectively with stakeholders and certification authorities.
  • Staying updated on battery technology, regulatory changes, and industry best practices; proposing improvements to verification processes.
  • Supporting validation and verification activities in accordance with ARP-4754A standards.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in battery development and familiarity with DO-311A.
  • Knowledge of certification processes and experience with DO-160G.
  • Proven ability in developing battery testing methodologies, analyzing test data, and interpreting results.
  • Strong team player with confidence in technical discussions and organizational skills.

Preferred skills:

  • Knowledge of HV and Li-ion batteries, digital communication buses, or systems engineering.
  • Experience with FMEA and FMECA methodologies.
  • Knowledge of ARP4761 and related standards.
  • Familiarity with UL 1642, MMPDS, DO-178C, DO-254 standards.

Additional Information:

  • Join a fast-growing high-tech company with a strong network of investors and partners.
  • Shape the future of aviation with groundbreaking projects.
  • Enjoy personal growth, responsibility, and a modern, flexible work environment.
  • Work in an inclusive environment that values diversity and equality.
