Job Description:

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. Currently, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), one of the world's largest research projects, is being built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work in this international environment with a team dedicated to world-class science.

For the Linac (LIN) department, we are seeking a Physicist or Engineer (all genders) to participate in developing the superconducting linear accelerator HELIAC. Currently, the first cryogenic module of HELIAC is in test operation, with two more in manufacturing.

Responsibilities include:
  • Supervision of manufacturing superconducting cavities
  • Cryogenic testing of RF-cavities, including development of digital low-level RF systems
  • Operation of the first cryogenic module
  • Participation in beam times
  • Development and validation of beam dynamics code
  • Operation of cryogenic infrastructure
Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in physics or engineering sciences or comparable qualification
  • Interest and ability to work with mechanical systems and accelerator installations
  • Knowledge in fields such as Radio Frequency, vacuum technology, beam dynamics
  • Interest in RF accelerator cavity design and linear accelerators
  • Team-oriented and safety-conscious work methods
  • Proficiency in English and German
Desirable Qualifications:
  • PhD in accelerator science or physics
  • Experience in Python programming
  • Experience with analog and digital electronics
