The KU School of Transformation and Sustainability (STS) invites applications for the

Professorship of Empirical Communication Research of Transformation Processes (W3)

to be filled by the earliest possible starting date. The newly established professorship plays an important role in the sustainability and transformation strategies of the KU at its Ingolstadt campus. The KU is committed to increasing the percentage of women in research and teaching and therefore explicitly encourages female researchers to apply.

Your responsibilities

The future holder of the position will research the connections between public communication and social transformation processes and use both qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical social research. Particular attention should be paid to the evidence-based analysis of communication logics in current challenges such as sustainability, climate change, digitalization and migration. The aim is to research and develop constructive narratives in an inter- and transdisciplinary environment. Excellent research achievements in the form of international publications and peer-reviewed third-party funding contribute to the KU's academic profile. Establishing and maintaining collaborations with research partners in science and the transfer with companies, organizations, public institutions and civil society is highly relevant.

The STS sees itself as an interdisciplinary faculty with the aim of subject-specific networking with other KU faculties. The future holder of the position is expected to participate in interdisciplinary and cross-faculty projects. They are required to cooperate with the team and assume responsibility in academic self-administration.

Tasks in the area of studies and teaching include actively contributing to designing and developing innovative, interdisciplinary and transformative study offers at STS. In cooperation with other faculties, the intersection of communication and transformation is profiled in existing and new, high-quality programs at the KU.

In addition, the holder of the position is involved in the University's third mission strategy and cooperates with other subject departments and universities as well as with non-university partners. Great importance is attached to an action and application oriented approach. The efforts are aimed at making the knowledge gained usable for social discourse and applying it both within and outside the KU.

Skills/Qualifications

Candidates have internationally recognized expertise in empirical research, broad teaching experience and very good didactic skills (proven, for example, by positive teaching evaluations, certificates in university didactics or teaching awards) as well as transferat the interface of communication, transformation and sustainability. Candidates must demonstrate experience in at least three of the following five fields:

  • Media-psychological approaches and communication science impact research (e.g. "impact", "change agents") in the context of communication and transformation processes
  • Crisis communication and transformative communication in journalistic formats, modern media and on social media platforms (e.g. video, podcast and virtual reality)
  • Storytelling and multimedia approaches for narratives, explanations, arguments and visions of the future
  • Innovative and responsive communication strategies in the context of transformation processes in organizations and communities
  • Science communication: Constructive approaches to promoting social and political change through dialog between science, practice and the public; participatory and transdisciplinary research on the one hand, responsive communication strategies on the other

The research results have been published in leading international peer-reviewed journals/books and/or by renowned publishers. The candidates can prove experience with successful acquisition of peer-reviewed third-party funding.Established national and international networks with renowned universities and/or non-university partners are a prerequisite. Furthermore, applicants have interdisciplinary qualifications and skills (e.g. leadership skills, role model function, participation in interdisciplinary qualification and networking opportunities, high level of social skills). They can demonstrate the ability to teach courses both in German and English. The candidate is expected to acquire good German language proficiency within the first two years of their appointment.

The requirements for employment are based on Art. 57 Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act ( BayHIG ) and include, in addition to the general requirements of the position, at least a completed university degree, an educational suitability, the special aptitude for scientific work, which is usually demonstrated by the quality of a doctorate, as well as additional scientific achievements. These can be demonstrated by a habilitation, a junior professorship or through equivalent scientific achievements, which can also be achieved outside the university sector. Managing a junior research group constitutes an equivalent scientific achievement under the conditions specified in Art. 98 para. 10 s. 5 BayHIG.

When appointed as a civil servant, the successful candidate must not be older than 52 years of age at the time of appointment.

The KU pursues a policy of intensive student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to spend an appropriate amount of time on campus.
