With about 17,000 students, more than 300 professorships and around 160 degree programs, the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) is the technical university of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. As a place of top international research, it offers excellent working conditions and career opportunities. Those who study, research or work at RPTU experience a cosmopolitan environment and shape the future.

We are seeking to fill a doctoral researcher position (f/m/d) as part of the DFG-funded project "Physical Limnology of Ponds". This project seeks to advance the mechanistic understanding of physical processes in pond ecosystems by analyzing the spatial and temporal dynamics of water temperature and its role in driving density-driven flows and mixing. By combining innovative field measurements with theoretical modeling, the project aims to develop a robust mechanistic framework to describe these critical processes. We offer:

  • The opportunity to pursue a doctorate within a high-impact, interdisciplinary research project at the forefront of environmental science.
  • Excellent supervision and tailored professional development to strengthen your academic and interdisciplinary skills.
  • Intellectual freedom to tackle complex challenges at the intersection of fundamental research and real-world applications.
  • Collaboration within a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and international team, along with integration into established national and international research networks.
Your area of responsibility:
  • Design and develop novel low-cost sensor systems (with technical support) for monitoring hydrodynamic processes in aquatic environments.
  • Conduct extensive field measurements using these sensors in experimental mesocosms and natural pond ecosystems.
  • Analyze and interpret data to advance mechanistic understanding of pond hydrodynamics and establish a hydrodynamic classification framework for ponds.
  • Publish high-impact research in peer-reviewed journals and synthesize findings into a cumulative doctoral thesis.
Your requirements profile:

Successful candidates must hold a bachelor's and a master’s degree in a discipline closely related to environmental physical processes, such as environmental science, environmental engineering, hydrology, physics, physical geography, or a related field. Solid technical understanding is essential, along with strong motivation to conduct fieldwork, collaborate in a team environment, publish peer-reviewed research, and complete a PhD thesis within three years.

We offer:
  • Health promotion
  • Family Service Center
  • Vocational Training
  • Flexible working hour and home office
  • Jobticket
  • Retirement provision
  • Sport & Fitness programs
  • Culture & Leisure offers
