Director of Security, AWS European Sovereign Cloud, Security Assurance

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the pioneer and recognized leader in Cloud Computing. Millions of businesses in 150+ countries run their operations and applications on AWS to create new revenue streams, improve operational efficiency, and reduce business risks.

In 2025, we will launch the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, a new, independent cloud for Europe, designed to help public sector organizations and customers in highly regulated industries meet their evolving sovereignty needs. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will provide customers the capability to meet stringent operational autonomy and data residency requirements.

Currently, AWS is seeking an experienced Security Leader to serve as the Director of Security for the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. This senior executive will be responsible for providing guidance and input on the controls in support of the security and sovereignty to the Managing Director of AWS European Sovereign Cloud.

The AWS Security organization plays a pivotal role in establishing and maintaining customer trust in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, ensuring operational autonomy and compliance with stringent EU regulations. This leader will be responsible for supporting the implementation of comprehensive security controls, maintaining independent governance, and providing input on matters of security and sovereignty to AWS Advisory Board.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support the independent advisory governance structure that aligns with EU digital sovereignty requirements
  • Oversee the implementation of technical controls ensuring data residency and operational independence
  • Build and manage relationships with European security partners, customers, and regulators
  • Engage and lead a team of security professionals responsible for implementing and maintaining security controls across the European Sovereign Cloud infrastructure
  • Collaborate with AWS global security teams while maintaining operational independence
  • Drive the security strategy and roadmap for the AWS European Sovereign Cloud

A day in the life as the Director of Security involves:

  • Collaborating with the Managing Director and European leadership team on security strategy and governance
  • Engaging with European regulatory bodies and national cybersecurity authorities
  • Reviewing and providing input on sovereign security architecture
  • Participating in customer executive briefings to address security and sovereignty concerns
  • Managing relationships with European security partners and vendors
  • Driving continuous improvement of security operations and compliance programs
Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or related field and 10+ years managing and leading teams

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or related field, experience working with European regulatory bodies and certification authorities, background in cloud security and compliance, and deep understanding of EU data protection regulations and security frameworks
