TheNational Forest Foundation (NFF) seeks an experienced, and results-driven Director of People & Culture who is hands-on and eager to lead the day-to-day tactical work of the People & Culture team while collaborating with the Chief People Officer on the strategic vision of the organization,


About the NFF: The National Forest Foundation was chartered by Congress in 1993 and is the official national partner of the US Forest Service (USFS). The Foundation leads with impact through three pillars of work: wildfire risk reduction, reforestation, and recreation for all. NFF works closely with communities and organizations across the nation to help advance the Foundation’s mission to restore, enhance and connect all Americans to National Forests and Grasslands.


The Foundation has grown significantly in the last few years in impact, revenue, and organizational capacity. Moreover, as a leader in forest conservation, the Foundation deploys 90% of its expenses towards projects and programs across the country’s 193-million-acre National Forest System. The Foundation’s core values reflect our forward-looking and innovative approach to building generational legacy.


Position Function: The Director of People & Culture will report to the Chief People Officer and is responsible for leading the recruitment, learning and development, and day-to-day human resource activities to build a highly engaged, inclusive, and authentic organizational culture to support the initiatives of becoming a leader in the workforce of the future. Within the framework of NFF’s recent growth, the Director will help build the workforce of the future by supporting capacity building initiatives as well as talent acquisition, development, and retention efforts. The Director will elevate the Foundation as an employer of choice by utilizing technology and innovation to guide decision-making.


Position Duties and Responsibilities: The Director of People & Culture will:

  • Collaborate with leadership to align organization’s goals and strategies related to organizational culture, staffing, recruitment, and retention.
    Plan, lead, develop, coordinate, and implement policies, processes, and training to support the organization’s compliance and strategy needs.
  • Oversee the administration of human resource programs including but not limited to leave, disputes and investigations, performance and talent management, recognition, occupational health and safety, and training and development.
  • Develop and execute best practices for hiring and talent management.
  • Conduct research of organizational trends including review of reports and metrics from NFF’s HRM systems.
  • Monitor the organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommend best practices. In addition, the position will review and modify policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Communicate changes in practices, policies, and processes to ensure adoption to build the workforce of the future.
  • Facilitate professional development, training, and certification activities for the People & Culture team.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education and Qualifications: NFF expects the Director of People & Culture to possess the following educational and experiential qualifications:

  • Minimum 8 to 10 years of human resource management with a progressive career path growth in human resources
  • Minimum 5 to 8 years of experience with HRM systems required; administrative experience with Paylocity preferred.
  • A passion and commitment to public lands and the mission of the NFF
  • Ability to advance an inclusive employee culture in a fully remote work environment and maintain an organizational culture aligned with NFF’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Ability to collaboratively manage, work, and network across functions, departments, and external networks.
  • Ability to work well with geographically distributed teams.
  • Flexibility to work evenings occasionally to support the needs of staff across multiple time zones.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred or equivalent experience.
  • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP preferred but not required
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

Location: The location for this position is flexible throughout the lower 48 states. This position is a remote/work-from-home position and requires reliable internet access and a dedicated workspace.

Compensation: The NFF offers competitive compensation and benefits. The starting salary range for this position is $87,500 to $90,200 with the ability to grow to $111,600 and above.
