Overview

Development Communications Manager (Europe) – multiple office locations considered: Amsterdam, Berlin, London or Stockholm. Application Deadline: 14 October, 2025. Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a creative, solutions-focused and hardworking professional to build the profile of our partnerships with institutional funders in Europe, including the Novamedia/Postcode Lottery Group.

The Development Communications Manager will respond to partners’ requests for communications materials, produce and edit social media content, and identify communication and media opportunities to raise awareness of HRW’s work and partnerships to a broad audience. This role will be the focal point for interactions with external constituents and will work closely with HRW’s Media and Development Departments to promote collaboration and innovation with partners. This is a fixed-term, full-time position for 6 months, with the possibility of extension. Location: Amsterdam, Berlin, London or Stockholm. Reports to the Audience Engagement Director (New York).

Responsibilities
  • Develop, adapt, and execute communications content, strategies and activities that showcase the impact of our work for funding partners and audiences.
  • Collaborate with the Audience team to generate ideas for videos, social media content and other materials that highlight partnerships and promote HRW’s work to a broad audience.
  • Liaise with external partners on communications needs and with internal stakeholders on content review, translations, distribution, and tracking.
  • Identify opportunities within HRW to deliver communications activity, such as news releases, videos, photos, campaigns, social media posts, and other content relevant to human rights issues.
  • Provide extensive reporting on communications efforts and media and social media reach.
  • Coordinate adaptation of editorial products to different languages to widen reach and strengthen partner profiles.
  • Work with the Multimedia team to develop multimedia products that support HRW’s objectives.
  • Advise team members on clear, engaging writing and visually compelling content, ensuring HRW’s editorial standards and high journalistic practices.
  • Collaborate with HRW Media and Development departments to develop communications plans.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple projects, ensuring attention to detail in both creative production and management.
  • Deliver outputs and performance reports in a timely manner aligned with the department’s strategy and priorities.
  • Incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion values into multimedia work, including collaboration with global partners and consultants.
  • Manage content distribution, logging, archiving footage, and related production tasks.
  • Attend donor-related communications events and meetings.
  • Carry out other duties as required.
Qualifications

Education: A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Multimedia, Marketing, Visual Arts or equivalent experience. Candidates with equivalent training/experience and a passion for journalism and/or human rights work are encouraged to apply.

Experience: A minimum of five years of relevant experience in broadcast journalism, video production, communications, marketing, or a similar field.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; proficiency in another language (Dutch, German, Swedish, etc.) preferred. Ability to work effectively with multiple languages required.
  • Track record in creating and posting content on social media that resonates with broad audiences; familiarity with legacy and emerging channels; LinkedIn experience is a plus.
  • Track record in developing and coordinating communications activities involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent storytelling, copywriting and editing skills.
  • Creativity and ability to turn around a shareable story quickly.
  • Discretion, sound editorial judgment, and ability to handle confidential information.
  • Working knowledge of Mac OS; proficiency in Canva, Illustrator, Photoshop or similar tools desirable.
  • Experience with digital tools like Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Sprout Social, and similar products preferred.
  • Experience in project management and tools such as Asana, Monday.com or similar.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, insights generation, and applying best practices.
  • Commitment to continual learning in communications.
  • Excellent time-management, prioritization, and attention to detail.
  • Strong project management skills from definition to evaluation.
  • Ability to multi-task multiple stories while producing long-term projects; thrive under deadline-driven environments.
  • Interpersonal skills to collaborate within HRW and with external partners.
  • Flexibility to respond quickly to events and produce high-quality written material under tight deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, creative problem-solver, highly organized, and a strong team player.
