About the Role

The focus is on the database, schema, data structure optimization to provide an (almost) real-time experience to our customers, even for complex queries on continuously growing large datasets. You will be part of an agile development team supporting and continuously improving our chemical full text retrieval search to fulfill our customer's needs. You will be able to contribute and expand your expertise and skills in a variety of career paths at Elsevier.

About the Team

The Reaxys team is searching for a self-driven and enthusiastic relational database specialist with a passion for performance optimization of databases hosting large amounts of data.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Understand different data structures and the corresponding data, and constantly optimize and adapt the data structures and schemas to fulfill customer use cases
  • Replicate the data structures in our database, i.e., the implementation of an abstract data structure in a database
  • Optimize the database, e.g., indexes, the data structure, and queries, and implement extensions, stored procedures for fast result retrieval even for complex queries
  • Be an active member of the agile team, contributing to ceremonies and team decision making
  • Work closely with developers, product owners, and other stakeholders to ensure timely deliveries
You should bring:
  • Expert (5 years) PostgreSQL
  • Aurora database experience with a strong focus on database, schema, data structure, and query optimization
  • A bachelor's degree (master's preferred) in computer science, or life sciences with a strong background in database performance optimization
  • Strong background in database optimization
  • Basic scripting experience in Bash, Perl, or Python
  • Fluent English oral and written communication skills
  • The ability and passion to work in a diverse team
The following skills will be a bonus:
  • Basic chemistry or life sciences knowledge
  • Experience or training in Oracle / AWS / C/C++ / Linux
  • Knowledge of Jenkins, JIRA, and Confluence
