Job Description

As a Control Automation System Engineer, you will lead the requirements, design, implementation, and development of digital control systems for the HVDC Control & Protection system. You will collaborate with various engineering disciplines within the HVDC business, including NPI, ITO, OTR, and Product Care, to develop technical solutions that meet project and tender objectives, while also fostering organizational talent and engineering process management.

Roles And Responsibilities

You will oversee the technical solutions to meet customer requirements based on reference solutions. This includes:

  • Leading the requirement, design, implementation, and testing of the digital control system, including network & cybersecurity design.
  • Configuring IEC61850 IEDs using vendor-specific tools and system configuration tools for system integration.
  • Generating Substation Configuration Description Language (SCL) files for system integration.
  • Applying sequencing & interlocking principles in substation automation systems on IEC61850 IEDs.
  • Designing, configuring, and testing HVDC control system hardware within budget and schedule.
  • Testing and debugging IEC61850 communication systems using tools like IEDScout and Wireshark.
  • Coordinating with Balance of Plant equipment and SCADA systems, defining IO lists, analyzing signal interfaces, and ensuring compatibility.
  • Collaborating with NPI teams to configure RTUs, BCUs, and Merging Units for digital substation environments.
  • Designing LAN networks, communication architectures, and configuring industrial Ethernet switches/routers.
  • Following standard design practices, conducting reviews, and producing detailed design documentation, including electrical schematics, wire/cable schedules, test specifications, assembly drawings, and BOMs.
  • Overseeing testing and FAT activities, preparing technical presentations, and assisting with installation and commissioning.
  • Ensuring proper documentation of technical data, coaching team members, and continuously improving product delivery speed, stability, and reliability.
  • Reviewing and approving design documents, ensuring quality and timely delivery within budget.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in Electronics/Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Strong experience in configuring Substation Bay Controllers, Merging Units, and IEC61850 IEDs.
  • Proven experience in control and protection system design.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication networks such as IEC61850 and Ethernet protocols.
  • Skills in control & protection relay logic design, electrical design for industrial control systems, and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Familiarity with Layer 2 & 3 protocols such as IPv4, OSPF, LACP, VPN, DNP, IEC, and Modbus.
  • Experience relevant to electrical power systems and substation automation engineering.
  • Working knowledge of control and protection systems, SCADA, and digital control systems.
