Automation/Rigging Maintenance Technician – Day Shift

Stage Automation

Full-Time Position

We are looking for an Automation/Rigging Maintenance Technician whose role will be to support the Automation and Rigging systems to ensure show readiness and safety by performing maintenance on electrical and mechanical equipment above and below the stage, developing a thorough knowledge of all automation, rigging and control systems, maintaining inventory of spare parts and supplies, and providing all other supporting services. All duties are to be performed in accordance with department and property policies, practices, and procedures.

The Automation/Rigging Maintenance Technician will:

  1. Ensure the safe setup, use and maintenance of Automation and Rigging equipment used by Artists during performances, rehearsals and training periods by completing inspections and maintenance in a timely manner;
  2. Update maintenance and inspection records within designated maintenance programs which could include Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as other show specific software such as AutoCAD in compliance with Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group established policies and standards;
  3. Facilitate and participate in all system installations, commissioning and load testing in accordance with Cirque du Soleil policies and procedures; Work closely with Production Services to establish policies and documentation;
  4. Operate the automation control console in a safe and consistent manner for performances, artist training, and maintenance operations.
  5. Maintain cue track documentation and participate in cue track rotation as directed;
  6. Control machines and processes, by using either control mechanisms or direct physical activity to operate machines or processes; including work at height, swing stage and powered vehicles;
  7. Develop a thorough knowledge of Automation and Rigging equipment specific to the production in order to operate it safely;
  8. Assist with inventory by identifying any additional Automation equipment that may be required and communicate with Lead when necessary;
  9. Participate in special projects including the installation of new show elements, and interdepartmental projects that include automated or rigging elements or other needs that may fall within the technician’s specialty as directed; Maintain a flexible schedule for work calls, special events, rehearsals, training, maintenance and evening show performances;
  10. Adhere to and actively promote all applicable German occupational safety and health regulations, including DGUV standards, the Arbeitsschutzgesetz (ArbSchG), and industry-specific guidelines, to ensure the safe operation of all technical and performance-related elements of the production; participate in all required health and safety classes and emergency rescue procedure training;
  11. Assist other departments when necessary for cross-departmental support;
  12. Complete all other job-related duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  1. At least two years of previous experience operating and maintaining motion control systems and/or acrobatic systems, including theater experience with large-scale productions;
  2. Strong metal fabrication skills such as cutting, grinding, fitting, aligning and welding;
  3. Strong mechanical drafting skills, knowledge of AutoCAD and SolidWorks;
  4. Ability to read and interpret drawings, blueprints and schematics;
  5. Knowledge of basic theatrical rigging; basic mechanics, electricity and electronics is an asset;
  6. Working knowledge and experience with industrial machines, motors, gearboxes and related tools, including design, uses, repair, and maintenance;
  7. Working knowledge of AC/DC theory and electrical safety;
  8. Ability to work, climb and maneuver at heights;
  9. Working knowledge of ANSI/ASSE Z359.1-2020, ANSI E1.43-2016;
  10. Formal fall protection and overall safety training; Rope Access and High Angle Rescue is an asset;
  11. Excellent customer service skills and professional demeanor;
  12. Previous experience working with maintenance programs;
  13. Ability to train on and operate various lifts and heavy equipment;
  14. Working knowledge of MS Office: Word, Excel and Outlook;
  15. Fluent in English, both written and spoken;
  16. Availability to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays;
  17. Qualified Event Technology Specialist (Fachkraft für Veranstaltungstechnik);
  18. Certification or experience in handling stage machinery, rigging, and safety equipment (e.g., Sachkundeprüfung, IPAF certification);
  19. High School Diploma and or GED required; Completed Ausbildung as Veranstaltungstechniker/in (Event Technician) or equivalent qualification in stage technology.
  20. Ability to perform the essential functions of the job including, but not limited to crouching, kneeling, standing, lifting, sometimes for extended amounts of time; operating various lifts and heavy equipment; lifting at least 50lbs unassisted, etc.; Full list of essential functions will be sent in the offer.
