Assistant Professor position – University of Giessen

The research group for Climatology, Climate Dynamics and Climate Change (Prof. Juerg Luterbacher), Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics, Geography, at the University of Giessen, Germany, invites applications for a fixed-term (3 years with the possibility of extension for another 3 years) Assistant Professor position (Akademischer Rat auf Zeit A13) in one of the following areas: Weather, Climate Extremes and Impacts, Paleoclimatology of the last 2000 years, or Renewable Energy.

Duties: Research, teaching, administrative, and management activities.

Research focus areas include:

  1. Statistical and dynamical analysis of weather and climate extremes in observations and climate models, related impact studies.
  2. Paleoclimatology of the last 2000 years, including statistical and dynamical studies in collaboration with national projects and the PAGES2k initiative.
  3. Research in the field of renewables.

Collaboration is expected within the new LOEWE Large Scale Integrated Program (Excellence in research for the future of Hesse): ‘FACE2FACE – Folgen des Klimawandels, Anpassung an den Klimawandel und Verminderung der Treibhausgas-Emissionen bis 2050’.

Teaching: The candidate is expected to teach statistics for geographers at the Bachelor and Master levels (preferably in German, but English is acceptable) and other climatology topics of their choice. The total teaching load is 4 hours per week during the semester.

Duration: The initial appointment is for three years, with the possibility of extension for another three years, potentially leading to habilitation (post-doctoral lecturer qualification).

Qualifications: Candidates should hold a PhD in natural sciences, with a strong background in programming, statistics, handling large data sets, GIS, and modeling. Experience in project management, teamwork in multidisciplinary international projects, and teaching experience in physical geography, climatology, meteorology, or geostatistics are essential. Applicants must demonstrate high-quality research, a strong publication record, and a commitment to teaching. A motivated, well-organized, creative, and enthusiastic team player is highly valued.
