Job Overview:

Lab technician needed to be responsible for generating and reporting genomic information from respiratory viruses identified at LRMC microbiology laboratories.

The information provided by the Laboratory Technician is used by the GEIS network to generate global analyses of circulating viral threats and inform vaccine selection decision committees to help formulate future vaccines.

Technical Duties:
  1. Identification and characterization of viral or bacterial pathogens present in biological specimens collected from patients.
  2. Quality control and management as required.
  3. Analyses of the data and report findings.
  4. Administrative requirements, training requirements, tracing requirements, and specimen tracking.
Qualifications:
Education:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in a biological or chemical science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited university.

Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification or a foreign equivalent certification or Medical Technologist (MT) certification is desirable but not required.

Experience:

Minimum of two (2) years general experience in this or similar field is required.

Sufficient experience and skills to be able to adequately perform the tasks identified in this job description.

Preferred Experience:
  1. Use of MHS Genesis.
  2. Familiarity with viral genome extraction methods.
  3. Bench-top Next Generation Sequencing platforms like MiSeq and basic bioinformatic tools.
Skills:
  1. Basic computer skills using Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
  2. Experience with android-based tablet PCs and/or smartphones.
  3. Organized, attentive to detail, and possess a positive, friendly, and professional demeanor.
  4. Knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations, techniques, and medical procedures.
  5. Knowledge of how to prepare US Army correspondence preferred.
  6. Ability to make group presentations using PowerPoint.
  7. Ability to search and understand Army Regulations especially those pertaining to occupational safety and health.
  8. Initiative, interpersonal relationship skills, and social sensitivity to constructively relate to a variety of patients from diverse backgrounds.
  9. Ability to obtain a US Military Motor Vehicle Operator’s driver’s license.
  10. Compliance with Health & Immunization requirements.
  11. Maintain current American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:
  1. Perform identification and characterization of viral or bacterial pathogens present in biological specimens collected from patients.
  2. Conduct quality control and management.
  3. Complete initial analyses of the data and report findings.
  4. Meet departmental administrative requirements, training and tracing requirements, and specimen tracking.
  5. Patient specimens testing duties include specimen identification and selection, specimen processing; nucleic acid extraction, reverse transcription, amplification, detection (PCR based techniques); real-time PCR techniques; cDNA sequencing; consensus sequence analyses, other tasks and techniques associated with microbiological, viral and molecular methods (to include detection of influenza viruses, gastrointestinal pathogens and toxins, hemorrhagic fever viruses, and other emerging respiratory viruses that adversely affect patient disposition).
  6. Patient Test reporting: Report results into LIS, ensure all work documents are accurate and completed in full; maintain all records for a minimum period of two years, report sequence analyses and pertinent clinical and demographic data, upload consensus sequence into public databases.
  7. Quality Control / Quality Management requirements: Comply and participate in all Quality Control / Quality Management protocols and procedures, to include performing Quality Control procedures applicable to testing performed and equipment used; review and comply with established SOPs; comply with all training, ongoing education and safety requirements.
  8. Reporting and administrative requirements: Includes participating in result certification; report generation; and SOP review and modification as required by supervisor or designee; maintain a weekly epidemiological report of surveillance testing results and submit results on a weekly basis to Public Health Command / GEIS representatives; assist in researching procedures, manuscripts and documents related to disease surveillance.
  9. External Training and Tracking Requirements: Participate in training as required; review weekly trends in resulting for submission to preventive medicine and host nation officials as needed; maintain and submit specimen surveys as required.

Some evening and weekend work may be required.
