Job description:

The DESY group "Information Technology" (IT) is participating in a variety of high-profile national and European projects, evaluating new and innovative IT technologies. One of the key challenges at DESY is preparing the IT infrastructure for the construction and operation of PETRA IV, the next-generation synchrotron. To ensure a fast ramp-up phase and cost- and time-efficient operations, AI-driven solutions will be integrated across all areas of the supporting infrastructure. This includes administration, design and construction offices, as well as scientific laboratories. To drive these efforts, DESY IT is establishing a dedicated AI team, composed of experts in AI and computing infrastructure. While all team members will bring a broad range of skills, this particular position will focus on the operational deployment and optimization of locally hosted AI inference services and chatbot applications.

About your role:

1. Evaluate, test, and implement AI frameworks, tools, workflows, and infrastructures suited for operating locally hosted generative AI services (ChatBot and inference solutions)
2. Design and configure inference backends, ensuring optimal deployment configurations and performance
3. Integrate into existing HPC-based GPU infrastructure the appropriate front-end and back-end technologies for providing robust, user-friendly, and reliable generative AI applications
4. Conduct performance assessments and optimization, leveraging available local high-performance computing (HPC) and powerful GPU-based infrastructure
5. Provide operational support, including troubleshooting, debugging, and enhancing service reliability across various AI models and authentication frameworks
6. Collaborate with other team members, and document implemented systems and operational processes

About you:

1. You have completed a university degree in computer science, engineering, or have comparable knowledge
2. You have hands-on experience operating Linux environments for data-intensive workloads; familiarity with container technologies and GPUs is a plus
3. You have experience working with AI inference solutions, ideally leveraging inference backends
4. Proficiency in Python and experience with API-driven AI solutions are desirable
5. You are familiar with working with generative AI frameworks and models
6. You have a collaborative mindset and the ability to work in an international, interdisciplinary team
7. Good command of German, both written and spoken, would be advantageous
