Job summary

The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin invites applications for a Student Assistant (f/m/d) to support the Berlin School of Public Engagement and Open Science. You will assist with research tasks, help deliver training activities, and contribute to training materials.

You are currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a scientific field, fluent in German and English (C1). The role requires 40 hours per month and runs until 31 December 2027.

Responsibilities

• Assist with development and implementation of research tasks (surveys, focus groups, interviews).
• Assist with development and delivery of project activities (online training workshops, participatory events).
• Assist with preparation of training materials and reports.
• Assist with translation of project content (English–German and German–English).

The Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (MfN) is an excellent and integrated research museum of the Leibniz Association with an international reputation and globally networked research infrastructure. It is active in three closely interlinked fields: collection-based research, collection development and cataloguing, and research-based public and educational work. Over the next ten years, the Museum für Naturkunde will realise its plan for the future. New laboratories and jobs for cutting-edge research will be created. At the same time, one of the world's most comprehensive natural history collections with over 30 million objects will be housed in modern collection buildings and completely digitised in the process. The implementation of the Future Plan, funded with a total of 660 million euros from the Federal Government and the State of Berlin, will only succeed with strong interdisciplinary national and international partners.

Project Description

The Berlin School of Public Engagement and Open Science is part of the Knowledge for Action working group within the Society and Nature science programme at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin. The project promotes research and practice in the field of Public Engagement at national and international level. Its activities include professional development programmes, sector development initiatives, and research into the value of Public Engagement for academic careers and institutions. Public Engagement here refers to activities and structures that support the exchange between research and society, creating benefits for both sides.The successful candidate will join the Berlin School’s training team and contribute to the delivery and further development of the established Public Engagement Training Portfolio. The role will also support the School’s work at the intersection of training, research and open educational resources, thereby strengthening opportu-nities for professional development and knowledge exchange in the field of Public Engagement.

Your tasks

• Assisting with the development and implementation of research tasks (e.g. surveys, focus groups, interviews)
• Assisting with the development and delivery of project activities (e.g. online training workshops, participatory and co-creative events)
• Assisting with the preparation of training materials and reports
• Assisting with the translation of project content (English–German and German–English)

Your profile

• Currently studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a scientific field (e.g. social sciences, education, natural sciences) and/or public engagement (science communication, science education, outreach, citizen science, etc.)
• Strong organisational, communication, collaboration and writing skills
• Fluent in German and English (at least C1 level)
• Proficiency in using Microsoft 365 Tools (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Forms, Teams, SharePoint) and Zoom. Experience with Google Apps (Docs, Sheets, Forms), Miro and other survey software (e.g. Question Pro, Mentimeter, LimeSurvey) would be an advantage
• Experience in facilitating online or face-to-face events, working with qualitative data or developing training materials (content or design) would be an advantage
