The Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies (Max-Weber-Kolleg) at the University of Erfurt invites applications in the fields of Classics, Music Didactics, North American and Modern History, Early Christianity, Religious Studies and Sociology as well as related subjects within the framework of the International Graduate School (IGS) “Resonant Self–World Relations in Ancient and Modern Socio-Religious Practices” directed by Prof. Dr. Jörg Rüpke and Prof. Dr. Hartmut Rosa (Erfurt) and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Spickermann and Prof. Dr. Ursula Gärtner (Graz), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Austrian Research Foundation (FWF) for up to

Re-founded in 1994 as a reform university, the University of Erfurt considers itself as a research-oriented university that is highly committed to international cooperation as well as innovation in teaching and learning, with a special focus on teacher-training programs. With its strong profile in the humanities, cultural studies as well as social sciences and education, it is a cosmopolitan place for academic debate on key social and cultural challenges.

Area of Responsibility

The positions are to be filled by 1 October 2025 for a period of 6 months with the aim of writing a funding application for a research project to be pursued at the University of Erfurt.

The project is a cooperation between the Max-Weber-Kolleg at the University of Erfurt and the University of Graz. Participants are required to have defended their thesis within the research project.

What we expect
  • excellent degree (Master or equivalent) in one of the above named or related disciplines and an Ph.D. defended within the joint research programme IGS
  • excellent knowledge of English, good knowledge of German and other relevant languages
  • willingness to cooperate with colleagues within the interdisciplinary research environment of the Max-Weber-Kolleg, in particular the IGS, and the University of Graz
  • willingness to take part in the joint study programme
  • participation in the IGS “Resonant Self–World Relations”

The positions are tied to third-party funding and limited to a period of 6 months.

As an International Research Training Group, the programme’s primary language is English.
