Sombra is seeking a senior software engineer to design, develop, and maintain scalable enterprise applications mainly using Java. You will own complex tasks from investigation through production delivery, collaborating with distributed teams and customer-facing stakeholders.

The role emphasizes strong Java/Spring/Hibernate expertise, frontend contributions when needed (TypeScript/React/Node.js), and a proactive AI-first approach to coding, debugging, and delivery optimization.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of commercial software development experience with Java as primary language.
• Strong hands-on expertise in Java, Spring Boot, and Hibernate for scalable enterprise apps.
• Experience with TypeScript, React, and Node.js; frontend contributions when needed.
• Experience contributing to large-scale enterprise products in an enterprise engineering environment.
• Public GitHub profile with Java projects demonstrating engineering expertise.
• Understanding of DevOps and cloud engineering, preferably AWS.
• Ability to investigate customer-reported and production issues and deliver long-term solutions.
• Ability to work autonomously and drive technical decisions end-to-end.
• Excellent English communication for collaboration with customers and distributed teams; availability 9:00 AM–5:00 PM EST.
• Active use of AI-powered tools in daily engineering work and knowledge of digital accessibility principles.

Your responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable enterprise applications and services, primarily using Java.
• Own complex technical tasks from initial investigation and solution design through implementation, testing, and production support.
• Investigate customer-reported issues and production incidents, conduct root cause analysis, and implement effective long-term solutions across application, infrastructure, and integration layers.
• Collaborate directly with customer-facing teams, product managers, architects, and engineers in a distributed environment, proactively communicating technical risks, dependencies, and blockers.
• Contribute to architectural discussions, technical decisions, and the long-term evolution and reliability of the product.
• Develop and maintain backend services, APIs, integrations, and supporting frontend functionality when required.
• Maintain high engineering standards through automated testing, code reviews, established development practices, and support for CI/CD, cloud, and infrastructure-related activities.
• Apply AI tools throughout the software development lifecycle to improve productivity, problem-solving, and software quality, while sharing practical use cases and contributing to the team’s AI-first engineering practices.
