Job summary

Upwork is seeking a hands-on AI Platform Technical Lead to own the design, build, and operation of a general-purpose AI-enabled enterprise collaboration ecosystem. You will lead through technical excellence, set standards, and mentor contributors across AI agents, workflows, and integrations.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience building and maintaining production-quality AI agents, skills, assistants, workflows, or integrations.
• Strong understanding of AI application concepts including agents, function calling, MCP, prompt and context design, retrieval-augmented generation, and enterprise search.
• Experience integrating systems via APIs, SDKs, webhooks, identity services, or automation platforms.
• Hands-on admin/engineering background in enterprise SaaS, collaboration, productivity, or AI platforms.
• Knowledge of security, privacy, and data-governance in enterprise settings.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain production-quality AI agents, skills, prompts, tools, workflows, and automations.
• Build AI solutions using MCP, function calling, APIs, and integration technologies.
• Translate business requirements into technical designs and production-ready capabilities.
• Develop secure integrations across collaboration, productivity, search, and enterprise systems.
• Create APIs, data connectors, webhooks, and semantic search features.
• Ensure data permissions, access controls, and governance are enforced.
• Evaluate grounding, memory, and context-management approaches for AI apps.
• Test and ensure quality, reliability, safety, and production readiness.
• Administer and optimize enterprise AI platforms, including monitoring and lifecycle management.
• Troubleshoot complex platform, integration, and data-retrieval issues.
• Set reusable technical standards and patterns for AI agents and deployments.
• Lead technical reviews and mentor other engineers and admins.
• Serve as a senior escalation point for AI platform and integration challenges.
• Assess emerging AI capabilities and advise platform leadership.
