BNY Mellon is seeking a Senior Director of FinOps to establish and lead a comprehensive FinOps capability across a multi-cloud, multi-vendor technology environment. Based in New York City, you will define the operating model, build the team, and embed cost-conscious decision-making with engineering, finance, procurement, and business units.

Senior Director of FinOps

About the Role

The Senior Director of FinOps will establish and lead BNY’s Technology FinOps capability, promoting financial accountability and maximizing return on investment across a complex, multi-cloud, multi-vendor technology environment. Reporting jointly to the Engineering Hub Lead and the CFO, Engineering, this role will define the operating model, build the team, and embed cost-conscious decision-making across engineering, finance, procurement, and business functions. The initial focus will be cloud and AI cost management, expanding into data platform economics and, over time, software usage-based contracts. The role will own the FinOps lifecycle across visibility, allocation, optimization, and governance. This position is based in New York City.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and execute an enterprise FinOps strategy aligned with engineering, finance, and business objectives.
• Establish an operating model and roadmap for FinOps agents supporting autonomous workflows and agentic products.
• Build and lead the Technology FinOps team.
• Develop cost taxonomies, allocation rules, and metadata and tagging standards.
• Create transparent allocation models by business unit, product, application, environment, owner, and workload type.
• Enable showback, chargeback, forecasting, auditability, and unit economics through self-service AI assistants.
• Manage commitment-based spending and optimize provider coverage against utilization.
• Deploy anomaly detection, variance reporting, automated recommendations, and remediation workflows with human approval for higher-risk actions.
• Build forecasting models and connect unit economics to measurable business outcomes.
• Partner with Engineering Analytics to standardize spend data across provider feeds.
• Maintain an authoritative cost graph with data lineage and quality controls.
• Oversee cost data pipelines from ingestion through near-real-time reporting.
• Provide dashboards and conversational agents for Finance and Engineering.
• Establish automated alerting, recommendations, and policy enforcement.
• Lead weekly operational agent reviews, monthly forecast and budget reviews, and quarterly contract and architecture reviews.
• Partner with Procurement and Legal on contract renewals, vendor rationalization, and commercial optimization.
• Embed responsible AI practices across agent-based workflows.

Required Skills

• At least 10 years of experience in technology finance, cloud engineering, infrastructure operations, or a related discipline.
• At least 3 years of experience leading a FinOps or technology cost management function.
• Demonstrated experience building a FinOps capability from an early stage through a mature, steady-state operating model in a large enterprise.
• Strong knowledge of cloud pricing models, commitment instruments, and consumption-based billing across major providers.
• Experience designing cost allocation models, tagging taxonomies, and chargeback or showback frameworks.
• Ability to influence engineering, finance, procurement, and executive stakeholders without direct authority.
• Strong analytical, communication, and executive presentation skills.
• Ability to translate AI-generated insights into actionable decisions.
• Experience in financial services or a similarly regulated industry.

FinOps Responsibilities

• Establish financial visibility and accountability across cloud, AI, data platform, and software usage-based costs.
• Define allocation models, tagging standards, chargeback, and showback processes.
• Manage commitment coverage and utilization across cloud providers.
• Develop forecasting, variance reporting, anomaly detection, and unit economics capabilities.
• Improve cost data quality, lineage, allocation transparency, and reporting.
• Deliver cost insights through dashboards, AI assistants, and conversational agents.
• Implement cost governance, automated alerts, recommendations, and controlled remediation.
• Review budgets, forecasts, contracts, architectures, vendor rationalization, and commercial optimization opportunities.

Compensation

• Expected base salary: $136,500–$275,000 per year at commencement.
• Total compensation may also include commission earnings, discretionary bonuses, short- and long-term incentives, and company-sponsored benefits.
• Final compensation is determined individually based on factors including experience and market location.
