Zusammenfassung

ETH Zürich invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on the evolution of early prokaryotic life within geodynamic and climatic contexts. You will join an interdisciplinary team spanning biology, geodynamics, climate science and planetary habitability.

The role combines metabolic evolution modelling with Earth-system dynamics, using quantitative methods and HPC. Ideal candidates hold a PhD in geobiology or related fields and have strong programming skills.

Qualifikationen

  • PhD in geobiology, biogeochemistry, Earth sciences, geodynamics, planetary science, computational biology, or related field.
  • Strong interdisciplinary background encouraged.
  • Strong experience in quantitative research, computational modelling, data analysis.
  • Ability to work independently to formulate research questions, develop hypotheses, design analyses, and interpret results.
  • Experience in geophysical/geochemical modelling or in bioenergetics, population ecology, eco-evolution.
  • Strong programming and data-analysis skills in Python, R, MATLAB, Julia.
  • Ability to communicate scientific results clearly in written and spoken English.
  • Collaborative mindset and willingness to work across disciplinary boundaries.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage an independent research programme.

Aufgaben

  • Develop and implement an interdisciplinary research programme on evolution of early prokaryotic life in geodynamic and climatic context.
  • Model anaerobic autotrophs and heterotrophs and simulate metabolic communities.
  • Investigate carbon and nutrient cycling and atmospheric evolution during the Archean.
  • Use geodynamic simulations to constrain geophysical and geochemical processes.
  • Explore how biological evolution can alter planetary conditions and drive system states.
  • Disseminate findings through publications, talks and collaborations.
