Zusammenfassung

ETH Zürich invites applications for a postdoctoral position focusing on the modelling of early prokaryote evolution and its interaction with Earth geodynamics. The project couples metabolic evolution with geodynamic simulations to study how planetary conditions shaped life’s emergence.

You will work at the interface of biology, geodynamics, climate and Earth-system science, developing interdisciplinary models and contributing to publications and collaborations.

Qualifikationen

  • PhD in geobiology, biogeochemistry, Earth sciences, geodynamics, planetary science, computational biology, or closely related field.
  • Strong interdisciplinary background is encouraged.
  • Experience in quantitative research, computational modelling, data analysis or a combination.
  • Ability to formulate research questions, develop hypotheses and interpret results independently.
  • Strong programming and data-analysis skills in Python, R, MATLAB, Julia or comparable language.

Aufgaben

  • Develop and implement interdisciplinary models of early prokaryotic life in geodynamic and climatic contexts.
  • Build on existing models of metabolism, carbon cycling and atmospheric evolution to test scenarios.
  • Use geodynamic simulations to constrain planetary conditions affecting metabolism.
  • Explore how biological evolution can alter planetary conditions and trigger transitions.
  • Communicate findings through publications and presentations; collaborate with project partners.
