Job summary

Axpo is seeking an experienced backend and infrastructure engineer to help build and govern AI platforms in a hybrid Basel area setting. You will work on LLM routing, tool registries, identity management, and secure deployments, ensuring robust, auditable AI usage.

The role emphasizes governance, open-weight model assessment, and collaboration with product and security teams. The ideal candidate has strong Python/API skills, Kubernetes/CI/CD experience, and a passion for AI governance.

Qualifications

• Solid backend and infrastructure engineering with Python and API skills, containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD and monitoring.
• Genuine interest in AI models and governance; experience with model governance concepts is valued.
• Strong communication, frontend basics, and documentation mindset.
• Fluent in English; German optional.
• Familiarity with MCP, A2A, agent frameworks or evaluation tooling, and Django/Azure is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Set the standard for how Axpo consumes AI and run the governance components (LLM routing, MCP tool registry, identity/permissions, rate limits, budgets, tracing).
• Build the deployment path from repository to running, SSO-protected apps with secrets handling and admin interfaces for non-technical users.
• Harden the infrastructure with isolated runtimes, code analysis, vulnerability checks, restricted egress and privileges.
• Support the teams building on the platform by fixing issues, improving documentation, and turning feedback into product changes.
• Assess open-weight models and European inference providers and make suitable options available.
• Collaborate with product, security, cloud, and business units to deliver production-ready capabilities.
