Job summary

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) in Basel, Switzerland, is hiring a Counsel to join the Legal Services unit on a 3-year fixed-term contract. The role involves providing high-level legal guidance across the Bank’s activities under the General Counsel, with scope for international cooperation and advisory support to central banks.

Relocation support is available for the successful candidate and dependents.

Qualifications

• Master’s level law qualification or equivalent.
• At least 5 years’ experience as an attorney.
• International experience in legal issues for central banks/international institutions.
• Ability to work independently on technically complex files.
• Excellent English drafting; German/French knowledge would be advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on the Bank’s structure and texts governing its operations.
• Advise on disputes and coordinate outside counsel when needed.
• Establish contact with public authorities and international institutions.
• Participate in committees and conduct legal research for central banking.
