The Opportunity

The Associate Director, Payroll, Europe is a senior payroll leader responsible for the delivery, governance and continuous improvement of accurate, timely and compliant payroll operations across the European region. Reporting to the Senior Director, Accounting, Europe this role leads the regional payroll operating model and partners closely with HR, Finance, Total Rewards, and external payroll providers. The Associate Director will ensure a consistent employee experience while balancing local statutory requirements, data protection obligations and regional standardization. This role is critical to scaling payroll capabilities in a growing, highly regulated organization.

Regional Payroll Leadership & Strategy

Lead the European payroll operating model, ensuring delivery of accurate, timely and compliant payroll across multiple countries and legal entities.

Serve as the primary payroll subject matter expert and strategic advisor for European stakeholders, including HR leadership, Finance, Legal, Tax and business leaders.

Translate global payroll strategy into practical regional plans, processes and service standards that meet local market needs.

Establish clear performance metrics, governance routines and escalation paths for internal teams and external payroll providers.

Build and lead a high-performing regional payrollservice hub, fostering accountability, technical capability and a customer friendly mindset.

Payroll Operations & Vendor Management

Oversee end-to-end payroll processing across Europe, including payroll gross-to-net validation, off-cycle payments, terminations, bonuses, equity-related payments and year-end activities.

Ensure appropriate review and approval controls are in place to support payroll accuracy, timeliness and segregation of duties.

Manage relationships with payroll vendors and other service providers; monitor service levels, resolve material issues and lead periodic performance reviews.

Partner with HR Operations to ensure complete, accurate and timely employee data flows into external payroll systems.

Coordinate payroll calendars and critical cut-off dates across countries, communicating requirements and risks proactively to stakeholders.

Prepare payroll journal entries and reconciliations, funding requirements, payment files and related accounting interfaces in partnership with Finance and Treasury.

Compliance, Controls & Risk Management

Ensure payroll practices comply with applicable European and local employment, tax, social security, pension, reporting and data privacy requirements.

Maintain a robust control environment, including documented procedures, approvals, reconciliations, audit trails and evidence of key controls.

Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting payroll and assess operational, financial and employee impacts.

Lead responses to payroll audits, statutory inquiries and internal control reviews, coordinating with external advisors and internal stakeholders as needed.

Identify payroll risks, root causes and remediation actions; provide clear reporting and timely escalation of significant issues.

Support adherence to company policies, SOX requirements where applicable, and data protection standards including GDPR.

Transformation, Systems & Continuous Improvement

Lead regional payroll transformation initiatives, including process harmonization, vendor transitions, system implementations and automation opportunities.

Partner with global payroll, HRIS and technology teams to improve data quality, integration design, reporting and employee self-service capabilities.

Standardize payroll policies, operating procedures and controls across Europe while maintaining necessary country-specific requirements.

Use payroll metrics, employee feedback and operational insights to drive measurable improvements in quality, cycle time, cost and service experience.

Contribute to the development of scalable global payroll standards, technology roadmaps and governance frameworks.
