Bridgemans and Haisla First Nation have created a joint venture limited partnership -Bridgemans Kitamaat Joint Venture Limited Partnership (BKJV) to provide marine and construction services to various industries on the Pacific North Coast. Bridgemans Kitimat Crew Management Ltd. provides crew for BKJV.
The Opportunity
As a Deputy Line Handling Supervisor, you willbe responsible for safely and efficiently handling mooring lines to secure ships during berthing and unberthing operations. Your role is crucial in ensuring the safety of vessels and personnel. Preference will be given to local candidates in the Kitimat and surrounding area.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Direct and supervise mooring line handling crew in the proper execution of mooring operations, including preparing and deploying mooring lines, securing ships, and adjusting line tensions as needed
- Enforce adherence to safety protocols and regulations during line handling operations, conducting regular safety briefings and inspections to promote a safe work environment
- Maintain clear and effective communication between mooring crews, bridge crews, and other stakeholders to facilitate smooth and coordinated mooring activities
- Provide training, guidance, and support to mooring line handlers, ensuring they are skilled and knowledgeable in safe line handling practices and emergency procedures
- Oversee the maintenance and inspection of mooring equipment including mooring lines, bollards, cleats, and related equipment, and ensure adequate supplies are available for operations
- Coordinate and schedule mooring crew shifts and assignments to ensure adequate coverage for 24/7 mooring operations, including on-call availability for emergencies
- Maintain accurate records of mooring operations, including berthing and unberthing times, line handling procedures, equipment inspections, incidents, and crew performance evaluations
- Address operational challenges, solve conflicts, and proactively identify and mitigate risks to ensure efficient and safe mooring operations.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in ship mooring operations or maritime roles
- On-job training may be provided
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and handling heavy mooring lines and working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills to coordinate with bridge crews, port personnel and fellow line handlers
- Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures for maritime operations with a focus on preventing accidents and injuries
- Keen attention to detail to ensure mooring lines are properly secured and maintained
- Additional certificates or training in line handling, maritime safety or related areas may be required
- MED-DVS / Radio Operator Certificate
- Ability to work flexible hours and rotation schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as operations may operate on a 24/7 schedule
- Complete drug and alcohol testing if required
