The Fire Protection Engineer position is a technical role within the firm focused on project execution for various facility design projects. The Fire Protection Engineer will be responsible for performing multiple aspects of fire protection engineering services on multi-discipline building design projects of small to large scope for commercial and government facilities, as well as single discipline fire protection engineering projects of small to large scope.
General responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Performing all aspects of fire protection design services including conceptual studies, programming, schematic documents, design development documents, and construction documents under the supervision of a Senior Fire Protection Engineer or the Department Director.
- Working on a multi-discipline design team.
- Meeting with clients to prepare and validate scope of work.
- Preparation of marketing and presentation materials as directed.
- Obtaining guidance from senior staff to resolve technical and coordination issues.
- Supervising support staff work, especially in complex problems.
- Performing fire protection services during bidding, including preparing addenda, amendments, and bid tabulations.
- Providing fire protection services during construction, such as site visits, RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and record drawings.
- Complying with quality control practices and procedures.
- Collaborating with management, clients, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Mentoring junior staff and monitoring their professional development.
Project responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Serving as a Senior Fire Protection Engineer as directed.
- Acting as Design Manager on projects.
- Preparing scope and fee proposals.
- Conducting project code analysis.
- Designing fire protection systems considering alternatives.
- Preparing code-compliant drawings and specifications.
- Reviewing calculations and work products from team members.
- Reviewing drawings from CAD technicians.
- Developing discipline specifications.
- Coordinating drawings with specifications and other disciplines.
- Incorporating QC and Gray Team comments into documents.
- Responding to RFIs and submittals.
- Performing QA/QC reviews and managing budgets and schedules.
Education, Technology, and Experience
- Bachelor's in Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET-accredited program or a postgraduate degree is preferred.
- Proficiency in current company software.
- Licensed Fire Protection Engineer in at least one US jurisdiction.
- Experience in leading design or fire protection engineering in relevant project types.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of sustainable design principles; LEED AP desirable.
- Additional certifications like CDT, CCS, or CCCA encouraged.
- Participation in professional organizations desirable.
- Familiarity with design/production and fire protection analysis software.
