Job summary

YMCA seeks a Substitute Programmer for the YMCA Physical Healthy Development Before and After School program across five HRM sites. You will deliver engaging programming, supervise children, and maintain records while collaborating with families and staff.

Position Status: Full Time and Part Time positionsavailable
Contract Period: September 2026 - June 2027
Compensation: $17.00 per hour

About the Role

Reporting to the Site Coordinator at the specific site, theYPHD Substitute Programmer is responsible for delivering high-qualityprogramming that creates a safe, inclusive, engaging, and nurturing environmentwhere children can learn, grow, and thrive.

The Substitute Programmer ensures compliance with all YMCApolicies, procedures, and Provincial Before and After Program (BAP)requirements while actively supervising children and fostering meaningfullearning experiences through play.

The Programmer also supports the day-to-day operation of theprogram by maintaining a safe environment, building positive relationships withchildren and families, and contributing to the overall success of the site.

Key Responsibilities

• Implementand actively participate in engaging, developmentally appropriateprogramming that promotes children's physical, social, emotional, andcognitive development while encouraging healthy, active lifestyles.
• Create,implement, and evaluate inclusive indoor and outdoor learning environmentsthat foster curiosity, independence, positive self-concept, and learningthrough play.
• Usea variety of teaching strategies, including modelling, observing,questioning, demonstrating, and positive reinforcement, to supportchildren's learning and development.
• Maintaina safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment by actively supervisingchildren and ensuring their health, safety, and well-being at all times.
• Completeall required administrative duties accurately and within establishedtimelines, including attendance records, child documentation, incidentreporting, and communication with families.
• Buildpositive, respectful relationships with children, families, colleagues,and community partners to support children's success and enhance thequality of the program.
• Contributeto a collaborative team environment by demonstrating YMCA leadershipcompetencies, fostering positive relationships, and creating a culture ofbelonging and inclusion.
• Consistentlyrepresent the YMCA's values and purpose while complying with all YMCApolicies, procedures, Child Safeguarding standards, Provincial Before andAfter Program (BAP) requirements, licensing regulations, and OccupationalHealth and Safety standards, including maintaining all requiredcertifications.
• Submittimesheets and other required payroll information through Payworks byestablished deadlines.
• Showflexibility and reliability amongst all five sites.
• Communicateprogram updates, successes, concerns, and operational needs to the SiteCoordinator in a timely manner and seek guidance when required.
• Respondprofessionally to parent/caregiver inquiries and concerns, escalatingcomplex or sensitive matters to the Site Coordinator as appropriate.
• Otherduties as assigned.

Education and Skills Qualifications

• Highschool diploma, or equivalent combination of education and experience,with a strong reference.
• Minimum1 year of childcare experience with demonstrable evidence of experiencelinked to the role’s responsibilities.
• Attentionto detail.
• Excellentverbal and written communication skills.
