Empower Simcoe is seeking a Youth Worker Student to assist youths with intellectual disability in social and community activities, supporting the Youth Engagement Facilitator with planning and implementing programs, and leading small groups during sessions.

The role requires availability Thursday evenings (5:00 pm–8:00 pm), with potential extended camp hours; the position is contract-based ending June 14, 2027, at $21.86 per hour.

Qualifications

  • Completed secondary school and enrolled in post-secondary education in social services or related field.
  • Experience with children and youth; experience with youth with exceptionalities preferred.
  • Valid G class driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Strong leadership, relationship-building and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications; relevant certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a small group of youth to participate in planned activities.
  • Identify goals for each youth and support attainment within the program.
  • Follow overall program goals and provide inclusive, supportive leadership.
  • Promote inclusion and teach social and communication skills.
  • Assist in developing youth plans and monitor progress.
  • Document supports and communicate with families/caregivers.

We are recruiting for a Youth Worker Student to assist youth with an intellectual disability or complex needs to engage with their peers in a social setting: to assist the Youth Engagement Facilitator with planning and implementation of activities and programs; to lead a small group of youths with disabilities in a variety of community, social, recreational and work activities. The candidate must be available to work three hours per week on Thursday evening from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Hours are not guaranteed and days and location are subject to change (Barrie or Orillia). You may also be invited to support our week of camp with extended hours (MAR 15-19, 2027). This position has an hourly rate of $21.86. This is a contract position that will end on June 14, 2027.

Minimum Requirements Of This Position Include
  • Completion of secondary school and enrolled in a post-secondary education in social services or related field.
  • Previous experience working with children and youth; previous experience with youth with exceptionalities is preferred; recreation, camping or mediator experience an asset.
  • Valid G class driver's license and own reliable transportation to be used in the course of employment.
  • Demonstrated skills in inclusive leadership, including building relationships, problem solving and decision making, self-awareness, championing change and innovation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Current valid certificates in First Aid, CPR, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (N.V.C.I) and medication dispensing or successful completion of a recognized pharmacology course.
Duties And Responsibilities (including, But Not Limited To)
  • Following the overall outline and plan for each session providing leadership to a small group of youth to enable them to participate in the outlined program.
  • Identifying with each youth in the group, their individual goals and expectations, and developing a plan to assist the youth in obtaining those goals within the structure of the program.
  • Following the overall goals of the program.
Promoting inclusion through:
  • Interaction with the youth.
  • Fostering healthy relationships amongst the group members, and between group members and their peers and/or community members.
  • Modelling and promoting appropriate social and communication skills.
  • Supporting youth to participate in various community activities.
  • Assisting the Youth Program Facilitator to develop plans for the Youth program.
  • Fostering independence by using each activity and interaction as an opportunity to teach new skills.
  • Teaching appropriate social, work and volunteer skills.
  • Administering medication as outlined in each participants' individual medication direction form
  • Documenting supports provided.
  • Conversing with families/caregivers and updating care plans as appropriate.
  • Participating in camp experiences with youth, as scheduled and required.
  • Financial monitoring:
  • Managing team expenditures on a week-to-week basis.
  • Completing weekly expenditure sheets.
