Job summary

Manulife John Hancock in Waterloo, Ontario invites a motivated Data Engineer Co-op to join our 4‑month program from January 5 to April 22, 2027. This hybrid role requires in‑office Tue–Thu with remote Mon and Fri, and offers mentorship within a values‑driven culture.

You will help build and optimize scalable data pipelines, support data ingestion and analytics workflows, and collaborate with engineering and business teams on data requirements and solutions.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with SQL and at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java).
  • Interest in data engineering concepts, including data pipelines and data processing.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git, Bitbucket).
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to learn in a collaborative environment.

We are currently looking for a highly motivated student to join us in our Waterloo, Ontario, Canada office for a 4-month co‑op, running from January 5th - April 22nd 2027. This is a hybrid position, where you are expected to be in the office Tuesday-Thursday, with the opportunity to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to a team of data engineers focused on building reliable, scalable data systems
  • Support the development and maintenance of data pipelines and workflows
  • Assist with data ingestion, transformation, and preparation for reporting and analytics use cases
  • Collaborate with engineering and business teams to understand data requirements and support solutions
Required Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with SQL and at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Java)
  • Interest in data engineering concepts, including data pipelines and data processing
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git, Bitbucket)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Exposure to data tools (e.g., Spark, Databricks, or similar technologies)
  • Basic understanding of ETL processes, data modeling, or data warehousing
  • Familiarity with cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud)
  • Understanding of large‑scale data processing concepts

Please note the salary range is expected to be between $52,650 CAD to $70,200 CAD.

The actual salary will vary depending on local market conditions, geography and relevant job‑related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualifications, experience, and education/training. The annual salary will be pro‑rated based on the length of the work-term
