ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)

The Foreman represents their trade on a project or group of projects within the ship class(es). This position manages and controls trade processes and procedures to support NASSCO's safety, quality, schedule, cost, and continuous improvement goals.

POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training)

Typically has a BA/BS plus 4 years in a related field, or AA/AS plus 8 years of directly related experience, or 10 years of directly related shipbuilding/ship repair experience in supervisory roles.

  • In-depth knowledge of all facets of their trade relating to ship repair.
  • Working knowledge of contracting and estimating procedures.
  • Knowledge and utilization of production processes, methods, quality, and technology.
  • Effective leadership, communication, multi-tasking, and team-building skills.
  • Proven interpersonal skills and ability to work well with others.
  • Proficient in computer-based software applications and databases.
  • Ability to analyze and develop safety policies and procedures to protect personnel from hazardous conditions, including ensuring proper PPE, following safety procedures, and performing work responsibly.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the General Foreman, with possible dual reporting to the Production Manager. Manages 20-50 direct and indirect reports, including skilled, semi-skilled, unskilled mechanics, and subcontractors. Supports program and production management by monitoring and managing manpower, quality, safety, schedule, and budget performance. Maintains communication across all levels to improve processes.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plans and projects manpower requirements to support production and program activities.
  • Ensures employees are properly supervised with necessary tools, specifications, drawings, and procedures.
  • Deconflicts work and informs management of potential issues affecting quality, schedule, or budget.
  • Attends daily production meetings and coordinates work with other shops.
  • Defines, measures, and controls production quality and safety within trades.
  • Monitors processes for continuous improvement and supports trade/shop rework correction.
  • Develops training plans to ensure personnel are properly trained.
  • Controls and manages trades via General Foreman and Project Managers.
  • Shares responsibility with the Production Manager for trade performance against quality, safety, schedule, and budget.
  • Advises on estimates, progress, and cost data.
  • Performs all job functions aligned with NASSCO's Mission, Vision, Values, and Principles.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
ACCOUNTABILITY

Responsible to the General Foreman, Production Manager, and Project Manager(s) for the performance of trade personnel, ensuring adherence to budget, quality, manpower, schedule, and safety standards.

UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Willingness to travel, reliable transportation, ability to operate a company vehicle, and access to all work locations including shipyards and vessels. Must have good attendance and punctuality, be physically capable of working in all areas of the facility and outdoors, and work in various climates. Must be familiar with naval ship repair environments, including working aboard vessels, climbing ladders, working in tanks and confined spaces, and wearing PPE. Areas can be dirty, dusty, hot, cold, and noisy.

Pay Range

$78,000 - $102,375 annually
