Job summary

Northern Strands Group of Companies is seeking a Welder Lead Hand for Fortis Mining, Engineering & Manufacturing in Saskatchewan to delegate tasks, interpret blueprints, and operate welding equipment to meet production goals.

Role requires a pre-employment drug test, strong leadership, and ability to travel to job sites. Fortis is Saskatchewan-based and known for innovation and community ties.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Valid CWB welding certification, GMAW and SMAW, certified in all positions.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience welding in a heavy manufacturing environment.
  • Possess welding and fabrication skills and knowledge.
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to motivate others.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints or welding specifications.
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal components.
  • Lead daily team activities and ensure production schedules are met.
  • Maintain machines, tools, and records of inspections.
  • Travel to job sites for onsite welding and field fits as required.

Fortis Mining, Engineering, & Manufacturing is growing, and we're on the lookout for a passionate, detail‑driven Welder Lead Hand, whose primary responsibilities are delegating tasks, interpreting blueprints and welding process specifications, and safely operating manual or semi‑automatic welding equipment to meet production goals. Successful completion of a pre‑employment drug test will be required as a condition of employment.

Shift Schedules
  • Monday - Thursday, 6:00am to 4:30pm
  • Friday - Sunday, 6:00am to 7:00pm
  • Current job opening: weekend shift

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Fabrication and Welding tasks
    • Read and interpret blueprints or welding process specifications
    • Operate manual or semi‑automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux- cored arc welding (FCAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW)
    • Operate manual or semi‑automatic flame‑cutting equipment
    • Operate metal shaping machines such as brakes, shears and other metal straightening and bending machines
    • Conduct repairs, modifications, and retrofits
    • Maintain a working knowledge of changes in technology, compliance, and repair techniques
    • Adhere and comply with company policies and Health, Safety, and Environmental regulations
    • Maintain safe work practices
    • Travel to jobsite to perform onsite welding and field fits, as required
    • Other duties as assigned
  • Machine inspection and maintenance
    • Maintain and clean all machines and tools
    • Report requirements for repairs to supervisor
    • Maintain inspection records and complete inspection reports
  • Processing jobs according to defined company policies and protocols
    • Receive instructions from Welding Supervisor for each job
    • Provide details necessary to administration office for job number assignment
    • Review, understand, and complete work order
    • Follow detailed instructions on the order and ask for clarification prior to starting the job
    • Ensure all parts and components used in the recertification process are recorded to the job number
    • Accurate and detailed tracking of time spent on jobs
  • Team Leadership
    • Assign daily work activities to team members in alignment with production schedules and project deadlines
    • Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to team members while working alongside them
    • Lead by example in productivity, work ethic, and attention to detail
    • Promote a safe, organized, and efficient shop environment
    • Ensure all team members adhere to all company policies, procedures and occupational health and safety regulations
    • Communicate job status, issues, and concerns to the Welding Supervisor in a timely manner
What You Bring To The Table
  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Valid CWB welding certification, GMAW and SMAW, certified in all positions
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience welding in a heavy manufacturing environment
  • Possess welding and fabrication skills and knowledge
  • Manual dexterity required to use power and hand tools
  • Experience with routine maintenance operations
  • Must be adaptable to a changing work environment, competing demands and is able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events
  • Ability to use judgment and apply discretion when making decisions
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to motivate others
  • Strong time‑management skills; ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
