Job description

Position Summary

Identifies or verifies required maintenance work, interprets contracts, schedules and coordinates in-house or sub-contractor work, and ensures work meets contract specifications. Ensures all aspects of the contract are coordinated and completed in a timely, efficient, effective, and profitable manner. Responsible for supervising maintenance crews effectively and supporting the Capital Works Manager for in-scope capital improvements and additional works as required.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities
  1. Perform condition assessments of pavements, signs, guardrails, tunnels, bridges, vegetation, and other contract infrastructure and assets. Schedule and coordinate work to be performed.
  2. Work with the Operations Manager/Capital Works Manager to determine the best approach (self-performance or sub-contract) for bringing assets into contract compliance considering cost, timelines, and efficiency. Plan and coordinate all work items.
  3. Inspect ongoing and completed work to ensure compliance with contract requirements.
  4. Supervise maintenance crews, including selection, development, and performance management. Facilitate all required new hire training and ongoing safety and work standard training.
  5. Respond to incident emergencies and coordinate work of on-site responders. Report accidents/injuries (actual and near misses).
  6. Coordinate with fleet teams/mechanics for inspection, calibration, and repair of the fleet.
  7. Manage, monitor, and control highway project assets and materials.
  8. Identify opportunities for improvements in work methods, processes, efficiency, and cost reduction.
  9. Create and manage successful completion of all work orders.
  10. Review claims for damages on the highway system for validity; arrange for data collection on such claims.
  11. Work with field coordinators to ensure accurate documentation and reporting of work as per contractual requirements and company policies.
  12. Manage inventory for consumables in collaboration with field coordinators.
  13. Interact directly with ministry staff, other contractors, external agencies, and the public to respond to complaints and issues related to drainage, signs, entrance permits, and road conditions.
  14. Assist and monitor routine work plan activities such as traffic control and maintenance work.
  15. Be available for emergency response rotations, including overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Manager.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Perform basic math functions and calculations.

  • Strong computer skills, especially in MS Excel and Word, and familiarity with the Internet.

  • Willingness to wear PPE and enforce safety rules as a supervisor.
Education And Experience
  • High School Diploma.
  • Minimum five years of experience in construction and/or road maintenance, with supervisory experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

  • Regularly required to stand, sit, walk, use hands, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear. Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and using various tools and equipment.

  • Prolonged sitting, occasional standing/walking, visual acuity required.
Field Environment
  • Exposure to weather conditions, noise, and potential chemical hazards. Occasional exposure to high places and airborne particles.
