Overview
As a member of the military, Weapons Technicians maintain and repair weapons, weapons systems, and ancillary equipment. They are members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Responsibilities include maintaining and repairing equipment such as scales, hydraulic lifts, locks, security containers, personal flotation devices, rebreathers, and equipment for heating, cooking, and lighting in the field.
Weapons Technicians are primarily responsible for maintaining and repairing the following equipment :
Work environment
Technicians are employed at bases and stations across Canada and on deployed operations worldwide, working in diverse environments including workshops, outdoors, or in temporary accommodations. Regular Force members are assigned to bases after training, with possible relocations, while Primary Reserve members serve part-time at community units without mandatory relocations, working evenings and weekends, with opportunities for full-time employment.
Entry plans
No prior work experience or specific skills are required. The minimum educational requirement is completion of Grade 10 or Secondary 4 in Quebec, including Math and Science, with foreign education accepted. Recruiters assist in determining suitability.
Training
Initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and specialized training at the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers School in Borden, Ontario, lasting 35 weeks. This covers tool use, weapon operation, electricity, hydraulics, firearm handling, maintenance, sighting, and operation of military vehicles.
On-the-job training
Post-training, technicians undergo approximately 18 months of on-job training, akin to an apprenticeship, with opportunities for specialized courses and advancement to supervisory and managerial roles, including courses on high-security containers, tanks, and artillery systems.
Part-time options
Available for Primary Reserve members, serving at community units, with training paid, and potential for deployment or relocation. Reserve members receive pay and benefits comparable to the Regular Force, serving primarily in Canada.
