Thompson Construction Group is seeking a Mainline Hoe Operator to support the Edmonton area operations. The role focuses on safe digging, trenching, and slope work for water and sewer installations, with emphasis on maintaining grade and coordinating with other crews.

You will operate the mainline hoe and related heavy equipment, perform routine maintenance, and follow OH&S safety procedures. Candidates must have strong problem-solving skills and reliable transportation.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years’ experience on an Excavator as Mainline Hoe operator.
• Experience with water/sewer installations and roadwork.
• Minimum 18 years of age.
• Operate equipment safely and responsibly.
• Strong problem-solving and manual dexterity.
• Proven ability to work in tight spaces with good communication.
• Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Operate mainline hoe and heavy equipment safely.

Job description

Thompson Construction Group has an opening for a Mainline Hoe Operator in our Edmonton area of operations.

Responsibilities:

• Excavate and safely slope (1:1 or engineered alternative) ditches to grade for general water and sewer installation
• Comfortable excavating in close proximity to existing utilities
• Work with Pipe Layer to expose existing utilities for tie-ins and for utility crossings
• Operate the Excavator and other heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner.
• Perform daily maintenance and safety checks of equipment.
• Conduct Pre-trip and Post trip checks on equipment.
• Work with ground personnel in the excavation and installation process of laying pipe on line and grade.
• Ensure trench is excavated to the proper depth/grade.
• Responsible for placement of water, storm, and sanitary sewer pipe in the excavation.
• Follow directions of ground crew regarding craning, gravel placement and grading.
• Cut grade with minimal time spent on excavating to ensure production is on schedule.
• Conduct trench work, which meets OH&S requirements.
• Operate Hoe on public roadways, maintaining proper awareness of ones surroundings.
• Ensure a sound understanding of the issues involving ground disturbance.
• Be aware of proper rigging of pipe, manhole barrels, etc. and ensure safe work procedures are followed during the lowering of materials into the excavation.
• Understand and follow directions from supervisors as to required work area.
• Work with the Foreman/Safety Department to investigate damage, incidents or near misses on the worksite, and ensure proper procedures are carried out according to the Company’s Safety Program.

Qualifications:

• Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience on an Excavator as a Mainline Hoe operator with experience in water/sewer installations, subdivision servicing, roadway construction and urban renewal projects.
• Minimum 18 years of age
• Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
• Excellent problem-solving skills required.
• Good analytical ability and manual dexterity.
• Must have proven ability to work in tight spots.
• Good communication
• Ability to work in physically demanding conditions.
• Successful candidates are required to have personal reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license
