Job description

This is a hybrid role with in-office work required two days per week at one of our SafetyCo locations. The role also requires travel to other SafetyCo locations across Ontario approximately twice per month.

Project Overview

The VP of Finance plays a key role in overseeing financial management, reporting, and operational financial controls for SafetyCo's newest endeavour, SafetyCoLabs.

This role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial tracking, forecasting, budgeting, and reporting across a complex, multi-workstream initiative. In addition, the role is responsible for treasury management, auditing and reporting into the broader organization, as well as processes and controls design and implementation.

This isn’t a role for someone looking to simply clock in and clock out. We’re looking for people who take ownership, think independently, and have the confidence to make decisions, solve problems, and move things forward without waiting to be told what to do. If you’re energized by building something from the ground up, thrive in an ambitious environment, and want the opportunity to make a meaningful impact, we want to hear from you.

Why This Role Exists

The VP of Finance ensures financial discipline across all workstreams by tracking project costs, managing forecasts, supporting procurement decisions, and maintaining accurate financial reporting.

By providing clear financial visibility and governance, this role helps leadership make informed decisions and ensures responsible stewardship of project investments.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means:

Project financials are accurate, up to date, and aligned with approved budgets, with clear visibility into all costs and commitments.

Budget Management

Project spend is actively monitored, variances are identified early, and corrective actions are recommended to maintain financial alignment.

Leadership receives timely, accurate, and insightful financial reports that support decision-making and project governance.

Forecasting & Planning

Financial forecasts are maintained and updated regularly to reflect project progress, risks, and changes in scope.

Project expenditures, contracts, and vendor invoices are properly reviewed, tracked, and aligned with agreements.

Compliance & Risk Management

Financial processes follow appropriate standards, internal controls are maintained, and financial risks are proactively identified and mitigated.

Requirements
What You'll Do

Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Develop and maintain detailed project budgets
  • Update forecasts based on project progress, scope changes, and resource allocation

Cost Control & Procurement Support

  • Ensure alignment between expenditures and approved budgets
  • Support procurement decisions with financial analysis and insights

  • Provide financial input into project planning and prioritization
  • Support financial governance across both digital and in-person workstreams
  • Participate in project meetings to provide financial updates and guidance
  • Identify and monitor financial risks related to project delivery
  • Ensure compliance with internal financial policies and controls
  • Support audit preparation and documentation where required
  • Maintain transparency and accountability in financial reporting

  • Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks, Sage, NetSuite, or equivalent) and advanced Excel modelling skills.
  • Strong experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting
  • Proven ability to operate at both a strategic and hands‑on level — equally comfortable presenting to management team and ownership group and processing a month‑end journal entry.

  • Excellent communication skills with ability to explain financial information clearly
  • Experience working in a fast‑paced, multi‑stakeholder environment
