Work Location: 6080 Young Street, Halifax, NS (On-site, 5 days per week)
Department: Engineering
Reports To: Manager, Video Engineering

Great engineers are driven by curiosity, innovation, and the challenge of building technology that performs at scale. In this role, you'll apply your experience to the design, evolution, and optimization of the platforms that power Eastlink's video services, helping deliver reliable and high-quality experiences to customers across Canada. From content delivery networks and cloud-based video platforms to networking, security, automation, and enterprise video solutions, you'll be involved in solving complex technical problems and shaping the future direction of our video ecosystem.

Working closely with highly skilled engineers, cross-functional teams, and industry partners, you'll have the opportunity to influence architecture, drive continuous improvement, and contribute to the long-term success of a national IPTV platform and related video services.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Video Engineer, you'll contribute to the design, optimization, and evolution of Eastlink's video platforms and infrastructure. Your work will include:

  • Supporting and enhancing our national Content Delivery Network (CDN), including containerized (Docker Swarm) and microservices-based content distribution, packaging, and encryption systems.
  • Planning storage and infrastructure solutions that support cloud-based DVR (nDVR) and Video-on-Demand (VoD) services.
  • Contributing to IP network design and capacity planning, with a focus on multicast technologies such as IGMP and PIM.
  • Designing and supporting enterprise video solutions, including DRM, in-building video distribution, and backhaul connectivity.
  • Managing video signal acquisition and content-provider interconnections.
  • Improving service reliability through effective monitoring, performance management, alarm management, and security practices.
  • Collaborating with Operations, IT, Internet Engineering, Billing & Provisioning, vendors, and other key partners to deliver and support video services.
  • Supporting customer-premises video solutions for residential and enterprise customers, including set-top boxes, companion apps, Wi-Fi, and wired network environments.
  • Contributing to value-added services such as Emergency Alerting Systems (EAS), ad insertion, and simultaneous substitution (Sim-Sub).

What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is naturally curious, enjoys learning, and is passionate about technology. You'll thrive in this role if you:

  • Take initiative and enjoy tackling new challenges independently while collaborating with others.
  • Have strong planning, organization, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Can work through ambiguity, identify solutions, and remove obstacles to progress.
  • Enjoy understanding how systems work, from network architecture to service scalability and performance optimization.
  • Are comfortable analyzing packet captures, traces, and technical data to troubleshoot or improve services.
  • Have a continuous-improvement mindset and enjoy finding opportunities for automation and operational efficiency.
  • Bring a customer-focused approach and can effectively prioritize competing demands.

You’ll also bring:

  • Post-secondary education in Information Technology, Telecommunications, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in telecommunications, ICT, or video engineering environments.
  • Experience with video testing, validation, and quality assurance practices.
  • Knowledge of commercial and bulk video delivery platforms, including hospitality, MDU, SMB, or enterprise solutions.
  • A strong understanding of IP networking concepts, particularly multicast technologies such as PIM and IGMP.
  • Knowledge of DOCSIS, XGS-PON, MPLS, and other broadband or WAN technologies.
  • Familiarity with broadband and video customer-premises equipment (CPE).
  • Experience with telecom billing, provisioning systems, and API integrations.
  • Scripting, programming, or automation experience.
  • Knowledge of video streaming technologies and standards, including HLS, DASH, AVC, HEVC, VBR, and adaptive bitrate (ABR) delivery.
  • Experience with platforms such as TiVo/Xperi, Concurrent, or Vecima.
  • Experience with CDN architecture, planning, and optimization.
  • Knowledge of storage networking technologies such as Ceph.
  • Familiarity with Digital Rights Management (DRM) solutions, including FairPlay and Widevine.
  • Experience with Video-on-Demand (VoD) and Pay-Per-View (PPV) platforms.
  • Knowledge of ad insertion technologies and Canadian Sim-Sub requirements.
  • Experience with traditional QAM video distribution, including the CommScope DAC ecosystem.
  • Familiarity with legacy video delivery technologies such as bulk analog video systems.
  • A strong understanding of cybersecurity concepts and best practices.
