Job summary

Job description

Primary Purpose

Applies technical knowledge of the maintenance function to supervise delivery of day-to-day services for the Vehicle department. Manages the provision of technical services to ensure the optimum condition, reliability and safety of company assets relating to vehicles, equipment and infrastructure.

Key Accountabilities
  • Plans day-to-day delivery of technical services and ensures compliance with all safety regulations and safe work practices, identifies safety risks and takes corrective action. Ensures that there is shift continuity for shift changes.
  • Supports the manager in the development of departmental budget and business plans, including identifying staffing needs, equipment, materials and supplies. Ensures effective execution of business plans by ensuring all necessary tools and materials for scheduled maintenance requirements and special projects are available in stock. Researches and purchases parts and test equipment when required. Liaises with vendors regarding part enquiries and warranties.
  • Reviews weekly maintenance schedule as per forecasted workloads. Assigns and reassigns work with shifting priorities i.e. workload or during an emergency. Meets with staff to identify change management requirements and resolve issues.
  • Participates in development/modification of policies & procedures, both routine and emergency, to ensure alignment to changing standards, codes & regulations.
  • Responds to emergency incidents 24/7. Diagnoses problems and exercises judgement in determining optimal solution within scope of supervisory expertise and cost limits. Acts as the on-site decision maker for decisions critical to safety, security and service as required.
  • Ensures department-specific Quality Assurance and Quality Control processes are properly executed. Identifies failed or non-conforming assets and conducts quality control reviews, taking corrective action as required. Under the guidance of the Manager, implements corrective actions resulting from compliance issues and technical investigations.
  • Coordinates monthly departmental safety meetings and participates in or conducts major incident/accident investigations when appropriate, prepares reports on incident, makes recommendations and participates in debriefing meetings as required.
  • Supervises direct reports, including recruitment, selection, training, coaching, mentoring, developing, motivation, managing performance, participating in disciplinary and grievance processes, accommodation and all other aspects of people management. Interacts with Labor Relations to address matters relating to reporting union staff.
  • Delivers safety & technical training and guidance to staff, other supervisors, and managers. Provides technical input on rail-related systems and other technology.
Qualifications

Education & Experience: The requirements for this job are acquired through Red Seal or Interprovincial Ticket in electronics, electrical or mechanical trade or graduation from a college or university in a relevant discipline and documented successful completion of applicable and appropriate supervisory skills training from an accredited institution. Requires five (5) years’ experience in maintenance technical service, including three (3) years’ experience in a supervisory capacity working in a unionized shop environment.

Work Schedule

37.5 hours per week.

Work Designation

Resident. This position works predominately on‑site.

Rate of Pay

The salary for this position ranges from $84,480 - $126,720 per annum. Actual salary offered will be based on education, experience, skills, and qualifications as they relate to the role. This position is currently eligible for a temporary compression salary adjustment of up to 10 percent above the base salary of reporting staff. Adjustments related to salary compression or inversion are reviewed on a regular basis and will cease when the position no longer meets the criteria for compression or inversion.
