Responsibilities

Primary Purpose

As the asset owner, applies professional engineering expertise to the assets and systems in the designated discipline and supports the safe, reliable and efficient rail transportation service delivery within an integrated, multi‑jurisdictional environment.

Key Accountabilities

  • Participates in the development and refinement of asset engineering, management and maintenance strategy.
  • Supports the development and implementation of Annual Maintenance Plan, Asset Renewal Plan, Asset Improvement Plan and capital replacement plans.
  • Participates in the development and refinement of engineering standards, policies and procedures for asset maintenance and projects to ensure alignment with regulations, codes and industry best practices.
  • Provides innovative, professional engineering advice and guidance to engineering, asset management, asset maintenance and capital projects on quality assurance, compliance assurance and asset performance.
  • Identifies asset problems and provides technical solutions. Supports the investigation of significant failures, conducts root cause analysis and presents reports/recommendations to Senior Engineer and Principal Engineer.
  • Assists in the development of FMEA and FMECA where required.
  • Ensures effective communication to all the stakeholders.
  • Provides engineering support to capital and non‑capital projects of moderate to high risk and complexity. Reviews and makes recommendations on the approval of the technical specifications, drawings and documentations regarding assigned projects.
  • Participates in the development and refinement of configuration control procedures for asset maintenance. Recommends changes on asset configuration control documentations.
  • Investigates and reviews industry best practice in rail operations and asset maintenance and recommends changes to BCRTC practice.
  • Investigates and reviews existing and emerging technology and recommends application to the SkyTrain systems as appropriate. Supports business case development and the implementation of best practice and new technology.
  • Develops and maintains professional and trustworthy working relationships with stakeholders in BCRTC and across the enterprise.
  • Supervises reporting staff, including all people practices such as hiring, training and development, coaching, monitoring and performance management.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • University degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, including a professional engineering designation or eligibility to be registered with EGBC.
  • 2 to 5 years of professional engineering experience in building or industrial electrical, preferably within transit or rail infrastructure environment.

Other Requirements

  • Working knowledge of railway operation and maintenance practices, including configuration control, data analysis, FRACAS.
  • Familiarity with diagnosing technical issues, troubleshooting power distribution anomalies, and performing technical investigations based on log data or system data analysis.
  • Working knowledge of electrical distribution systems spanning medium voltage (25 kV, 12.5 kV) down to low voltage (600 V, 120/208 V), including familiarity with substations, transformers, switchgear, UPS, panelboards, and motor control centers (MCCs).
  • Experience assisting with the electrical design of industrial facilities and buildings, including cable/conduit routing, grounding/bonding, lighting, and auxiliary utility power.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in reading, interpreting, and redlining complex electrical drawings, including single‑line diagrams, electrical and control schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Familiarity with the integration and troubleshooting of control systems, including SCADA, PLCs, and automation networks within facility or power distribution environments.
  • Working knowledge of electrical protection principles and familiarity with the function, application, and basic troubleshooting of protection relays used in medium and low‑voltage equipment.
  • Hands‑on experience or exposure to power system modeling software like ETAP is an asset.
  • Functional working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), CSA Z462 (Electrical Safety in the Workplace), and other relevant industry regulations, standards.
  • Experience supporting the operations, maintenance, and asset management of existing low‑ and medium‑voltage electrical infrastructure, including managing electrical component obsolescence, reviewing preventive maintenance practices, and analyzing equipment health data.
  • Basic understanding of testing, commissioning, and predictive maintenance practices for power systems, such as insulation resistance test, breaker timing, contact resistance, infrared thermography.
  • Advanced skill in creating technical reports, standards, procedures, specifications, method statements, risk assessments, FMECA.
  • Solid knowledge of the principles, theories, concepts and practices of project management and project reporting.
  • Solid time management skills to balance and coordinate effort across multiple, concurrent activities.
  • Solid communication skills and interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders, with the ability to achieve consensus between groups.
Other Information

Registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) may be considered.

Recruitment Process

An applicant will be required to demonstrate their suitability for this position by meeting the minimum level of qualifications and experience in order to be invited into the selection process. A standard interview format will be used including general, scenario and behavioural descriptive interview questions.

37.5 hours per week.

Resident. This position works predominately on‑site.

Rate of Pay

The salary for this position ranges from $91,840 to $137,760 per annum. Actual salary offered will be based on education, experience, skills, and qualifications as they relate to the role.
